Commercial Description:
Yuzu is the Japanese name for a citron (a slightly less acidic lemon-lime type fruit). It is a wonderfully aromatic fruit with a snappy zest that is much prized in Japan. We received our portion from the Temple grounds of the family of one of Baird Beers' closest friends. We proceeded to shave off and collect the outer peels and hand-squeeze the juice. We then added both the peels and the juice to a rich, malted-wheat accented wort at the end of kettle boil. The end result is, in a word, divine! Hazy golden-orange in color, Temple Garden Yuzu Ale sports a cloud-like creamy white head that immediately conjures images of a higher being. The brisk citric aroma of Yuzu quickly invades the olfactory senses. The mouthfeel is softy coating and fruity-sweet but a playful carbonation and citric acidity keep the palate in an alert state of attention. Finally, a kiss of malt roundness and honeyed sweetness send the Yuzu fruit flavor into paroxysms of Nirvana-like joy. Temple Garden Yuzu Ale surely is a beery sign that, in the apocryphal words of Benjamin Franklin, "God loves us and wants us to be happy."

650. Thanks, Hogfodder! Wow, this was seriously a delight. Pours bright orange-y medium amber with a thin tan head. Bright and very attractive fruit-peel nose; dry but still possessed of a fruity sweetnes without a doubt. Creamy and approachable right from the start. Balanced; sweet. pithy, dry, fruity and malty all at once. Clean lightly fruity but cerealistic finish. Great stuff.

PIB 2008. I have no idea what yuzu is, but this beer turned out really nice, so i’m a bit interested now. Very floral aroma and flavor, sort of tropical fruit/apricot sort of flavors, fresh and crisp.

On tap at Portland Int’l Beerfest 2008--Poured a glowing orange-amber body with a small off-white head. Tremendous floral and fruity nose. Herbal, melon essence. Sweet, sharp flavor that finished dry and bitter. Very nice!

Caramel citrusy smell with a nice tan head resting on the orange amber body. Taste seems focused more on the peel of yuzu rather than the actual fruit. Sour and bitter tones on the tongue. There is a certain soap detergent like quality that i’m not too crazy about. Strangely enough, it’s the finish of this beer that leaves me wanting more. A dry, patchy, ropey tart spell that retains a bitterness (again, it’s the fruit peel flavour coming through). This is labeled as a fruit beer (and technically it is) but the taste hovers somewhere around the feeling of an amber ale..hard to explain. Overall, Temple Garden is not a bad brew; just not something that I could see myself enjoying on a regular basis. On an artistic note, Baird can’t seem to get a handle of designing any decent labels and this one just looks awkward.

Not sure what a yuzu is but I’m pretty sure there is a lot of it in the nose. Caramel, herbs, melon, soap and I’m guessing yuzu again in the mouth. Slick soapy mouthfeel with a nice firm roundness. Herbal/green fruit bitterness with gardenia finishing with bread and green pepper.
