JB175 (1642), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 30, 2009 2004 bottle - Nice looking reddish color, very port-like with no head. Aroma of big sugar, oak, over ripe fruits, sherry, and port. Flavor is quite sweet - a lot like GLI’s 275th with overwhelming sugar, sweet and ripe tropical fruits, oxidation/sherry, wood. Quite nice all around, but for the price you can get almost a case of Old Horizontal, which I would much prefer. Nice for a one time treat. SuzyGreenberg (1023), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 28, 2009 super cool looking 375 ml bottle - thanks tom!! dark orange with some floaties adding to a slight haze; quite harsh nose from the high alcohol and incredible sweetness; full on syrupy texture that would be great for cooking; for drinking though, much too sweet and harsh for my liking SamGamgee (1140), Isla Vista, California, USA Jun 22, 2009 50cl bottle thanks to photomike. Orange amber color with no head, which was to be expected due to the lack of carbonation. Sweet and fruity aroma of dried apples, brown sugar, and rich caramel. The flavor was a malt feast, with low hops and almost no alcohol presence. Big dried fruit and brown sugar flavors, with hint of oxidation adding to the port wine feel of the beer. The body is full and a touch oily, with zero carbonation. I wasn’t really sure what to expect going into this beer, heck, I didn’t even know that it was still, but I loved it. A very well crafted and unique barley wine that is a great dessert sipper. I’m glad that we split this five ways, as it was about the perfect amount, akin to a dessert wine. At the price it commands, this will be a very rare purchase, but I would definitely like to have it again. bitbucket (1910), Kirkland, Washington, USA Jun 8, 2009 Corked 375, 2005. Thanks, After4ever. Pours hazy orange amber with no head. Luscious citrus, toffee and vanilla aroma. Full body, no carbonation. Incredibly sweet taste of citrus, apple, grape, caramel and wood. Seems to be way under-attenuated and unbalanced. after4ever (2419), Brier, Washington, USA Jun 8, 2009 375, 2005. Thanks, Hopscotch! One of the most complex, pleasant, and interesting beers that ever overwhelmed me with sugar. Loved it, but couldn’t finish it. My fault for opening on a hot day. Be warned. Pours a murky dark brown with bright caramel highlights. Headless, laceless, leggy, oily, sticky. Body’s super oily and sticky on the tongue. Oranges, sweet grape juice, caramel, toffee. Big thick sticky body, wow. Very sugary sweet--lots of complex flavors behind all that sugar. Could probably cellar for decades. Sammy (3609), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 7, 2009 Mondiale 2009, a good place to try expensive Italian craft beers. This one had a small head, and little carbonation. I drank it but its style is akin to cough medicine. Diogène (473), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jun 4, 2009 Brown with a thin head, average retention. Aroma is very sweet with maple syrup, wood, alcohol and hops. Flavor is also very sweet with a lot of maple syrup and wood, caramel, fruits and hops. Full body with a liquorous mouthfeel. Excellent! anders37 (3951), Malmö, Sweden Jun 3, 2009 Bottle. Vintage 2005. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Has a sweet malty dark fruit and caramel aroma with some alcoholic hints. Smooth sweetish malty dark fruit and caramel flavor. Has a fruity malty warming dark fruit flavor with some hints of alcohol and caramel in the aftertaste. Very nice.
