Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA Feb 25, 2008 Pours with a deep red body topped by a thin head with no lacing. It’s very sweet and malty with lots of candy sugar and a little bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied and smooth. pepsican (883), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA Feb 22, 2008 Pours a hazy dark amber with no head. A large sherry and malt nose. Flavor is just not good in every way. Fake sugar, odd alcohol (powerful but no burn), green apple, raisins, rotten bodies. If this was classified as schnapps instead of beer I’d be a bit more forgiving in the score. This isn’t just a bash it because it is expensive review, this stuff is awful. I honestly had a difficult time getting through my small sample. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Feb 4, 2008 2004 vintage, purchased at Liquor Max in Loveland, CO. Pours hazy brown with a spare, fizzy, light brown head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toffee), average hops (flowers, perfume), average yeast (dough) with notes of light alcohol, raisin, date, port, and maple syrup. Full bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, heavy sweetness, light acidity, and moderate bitterness. A definite sipper that gets better as it warms closer to room temperature. unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA Jan 15, 2008 15 DEC 07, Southeast YeHa. Vintage 2004. Medium copper. Aroma of mead, alcohol, brown sugar, maple. Very still body. Very mead like, of the stillness. Sweet flavors. Lots of alcohol. PDer! Gillard (42), Florida, USA Jan 4, 2008 A big thanks to Ibrew2or3,Quake1028,and Degarth for trhis one. This one changed my opinion of barley wines. Pours a beautiful copper collor with no head to speak of. Taste of candied fruits, figs even a hint of apples. Palate was spot on thick and coating. All and all one the best beverages i have had to date.
Shag (1922), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA Jan 4, 2008 A copper color with virtually no head. The aroma consists of alcohol, dark fruit, and some brandy notes. The flavor consists of maple syrup, honey, sherry, and grapes. A very warming beer but not as sweet as I had imagined. Overall this was a very nice barleywine. Rictus (126), Camdenton, Missouri, USA Jan 2, 2008 Sweet wine smell. Beautiful dark amber color. Abit too sweet, very port-like without the tongue drying that wine does. A little alcohol that kind of makes the effect of capsaicin. Very thick and uncarbonated feel to it. Kind of like a sweet wine all around. Good if you like wine. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Dec 16, 2007 Appearance: Pours a still, clear reddish-brown body. It certainly does look viscous!
Smell: Honey blended with rich caramel syrup and light brown sugar. Distinctive golden raisin character. Hint of oloroso.
Taste: From the word "go" it’s an extreme honey-sweet, caramel flavor with plenty of golden raisin fruitiness. Some slight oxidative notes. Faint hint of herbal hops. Sweet, succulent finish with a perky alcoholic kick. It’s hard not to have a certain "glow" about you after that first sip.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Mild carbonation. Nicely warming. Xyauyù has a lush, velvety mouthfeel you’d expect from a sweet dessert wine.
Drinkability: Truly, a fantastic beer! And it better be for the cost, especially when you consider the picture of the bottle on your screen is the actual size of the bottle itself.
