Pint on tap@t Ballast Point Old Grove brewery: Deep amber, the color of rootbeer, with a small (bar pour) light beige head. Aroma is sweet malty caramel. Flavor starts caramel sweet balanced perfectly by a spicy hop bitterness in the finish. Medium body is smooth with moderate carbonation.

On tap @ the Linda Vista location. Clear copper orange with a small beige head, fair retention. Light caramel and toasted malts dominate with some lager yeast behind in the nose. I pick up a little ethanol in the flavor and lightly spicy hops. Bitterness peaks @ a 3, semi-dry. Moderate carbonation with a medium body. Not too bad.

Pours a rich mahogony color from the tap at the brewery. Smells of vanilla and pie spices with plenty of sugar and raw sap in the flavor. Stale hops are apparent on the finish.

Sample at Breakwater Brewing in Oceanside. This beer is a dark brownish-amber color with a thin and creamy off-white head that recedes slowly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Roasted malt and fruit in the nose with a touch of anise. Medium body with a roasty character, and flavors of bready malt, hops and caramel. The finish is malty with a lingering mild hops aftertaste. Decent all around.

On-tap at HomeBrew Mart. Pours brown, slightly red with a moderate white head, good lace. Smells dark and malty crisp, haven’t smelled a beer quite like it, slightly sour, slightly smokey. Tastes slightly metallic, slightly like black licorice, and malty as well. Medium body with good carbonation.

On tap at BP. A deep deep amber pour with a cream lite tan head. Nose is caramelly sweet and solid. Very sweet front that rides the malt forevery and fades to a decent bitter. A bit thin but good carbonation is a plus. A better than average O/fest.
