Commercial Description:
Ballast Point Black Marlin Porter is a rich dark chocolaty Porter with a distinctive American hop character. It is nitrogen dispensed which gives it a creamy texture, thick head and a balanced flavor that is reminiscent of traditional British cask conditioned ales. It is a great beer to go with hearty foods and is surprisingly one of the few beers that goes well with dessert.

In short: Black malts and grassy hops, low on the fruity side. Basic light session porter. Ok.
How: Bottle, sample at Mondial de la Bière 2008
The look: Black body with a small beige head
In long: Nose has light chocolate and light fruity notes (grapes mainly). Taste has some fudge, a little black chocolate and develops a light fruit cake flavour as it warms up. Short grassy bitterness. Roastiness level is rather low, body is a bit thinner than it should be. A grainy/floury sensation makes it somewhat dry. Well brewed but very standard. Nothing out of the unusual.

Bottle shared with the Thrashmaster. Very smooth mouthfeel coupled with a well-balanced slightly roasted semi-chocolatey taste. Finish is subtle and somewhat dry. This one’s a keeper.

Sample at Alan’s HSC initation. Thanks Rogueone for sharing! The beer pours a very dark brown color with a medium thin beige head that dissipates steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass.Nice roasted coffee aroma with notes of chocolate and malt. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and hops. The finish is dry and roasty with a mildly bitter hops and coffee aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable from start to finish.

Bottle sampled at Alan’s HSC initiation: I really, really enjoyed this porter. Very dark mahogany, grainy pour with a very frothy and bubbly head. Aroma is creamy, burnt sugars, and a coffee-lingering roastiness. Nicely balanced hop profile here with the chocolate maltiness of this brew. Definitely a memorable porter I’d like to have more of.

Draft @ Lou & Mickeys, San Diego. Opaque, with a small persistent head. Aroma is coffee sweetened with brown sugar and molasses. Flavor initially has more sweetness than expected, but deeper in the glass some nice roast bitterness balances with flavors of spicy green wood, dry cocoa and slight char. Medium body is fairly smooth and dry.

Bottle @ le Mondial

App.: Pitch black, tiny light brown head, oily

Aromas: Caramel malts, caramel, prunes, plums, toffee

Palate: Lack of balance and body, bitter and sweet quickly fades to an oily finish, medium body

Flavors: Mineral, malty, hint of maple syrup

Notes: Dissapointing...
