Commercial Description:
Ballast Point Black Marlin Porter is a rich dark chocolaty Porter with a distinctive American hop character. It is nitrogen dispensed which gives it a creamy texture, thick head and a balanced flavor that is reminiscent of traditional British cask conditioned ales. It is a great beer to go with hearty foods and is surprisingly one of the few beers that goes well with dessert.

750 ml. Pours coffee-black with little to no head, leaving just a thin lace around the edges of the glass. Aroma is licorice and a complex wood with nails in it smell. Wonderful smokey, full mouthfeel, but flavor is obscured in some way. Roasted coffee and bitterness prevale on second and third tastings. Not tasting the chocolate that other have mentioned. Nice porter. I’d definitely drink it again.

(Bottle at Hilpeä Hauki, Helsinki, on 2009-04-24) Almost black. Quite quickly disappearing, medium sized and lightly tan coloured head. Metallicness and liquorice in aroma. Medium bodied and dry palate with medium carbonation. Roastedness, ash, coffee, bitterness, liquorice and hint of chocolate in taste. Ash and bitterness in aftertaste.

A nice, easy going porter, but nothing that really stands out. Dark brown pour. Roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, cocoa, and some herbal earthy notes.

Pours a very dark brown. Some light seeps through. Some roasted malt and chocolate in the aroma. This one seems a little thin and despite a decent roast malt and mocha presence there’s a metallic finish that sort messes things up a bit. I guess it’s decent.

Bottled. Deep reddish brown coloured. Dense and creamy light brown head. Aroma of roast, fruits, light spices, light chocolate and some vague herbal notes. Flavour is full of bitter chocolate, roast and has a herbal touch. Medium to full bodied. Dry. Ends on a roasty bitterness, which last surprisingly long. Quite smooth and balanced.

A pretty good porter. Lots of roasted flavors. Lots of malts and well produced hops. A pretty good porter.
