Commercial Description:
Ballast Point Black Marlin Porter is a rich dark chocolaty Porter with a distinctive American hop character. It is nitrogen dispensed which gives it a creamy texture, thick head and a balanced flavor that is reminiscent of traditional British cask conditioned ales. It is a great beer to go with hearty foods and is surprisingly one of the few beers that goes well with dessert.

(Bottle, Ölbaren, Copenhagen, 14 Feb 2009) black colour with ruby hints. Creamy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with cocoa, roasted coffee and citrussy hops. Malty, roasted taste with notes of coffee and chocolate, citrussy hops in the finish. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, mainly dry. Solid and nice porter.

Pours a very dark brown, opaque but for the rim. Fairly light coffee aroma, but with a very nice dry chocolate/cocoa flavor.

Pour: Bomber to pint glass. Darkest brown, clear, with a thin beige head that fizzles out pretty quickly. A tiny amount of lacing. Nose: Toasted grains, cream and coffee, some roast. Mouth: Black coffee, slightly sour roast, some charcoal. Lacks some sweetness and body. Very dry, maybe a little astringent. Overall just seems a little watered down.

AR- Moderate roasty aroma, hints of sweet coffee and chocolate in support of modest hop aroma of pine and grass, dark fruit esters linger, no diacetyl AP- Very dark brown hue that borders on opaque, full tan-colored head with good retention, swaths of lacing on the glass FL- Moderate malts with lightly burnt coffee and chocolate flavors, touch of roasty malts, medium hop bitterness and flavor (grass/pine), some light sourness in the finish PA- Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation, slight astringency, low level of alcohol warmth, smooth texture with light prickliness in finish OV- Good balance of darker malts with American hops, the roast is present throughout, some slight distraction due to the slight lactic sourness

Bottle: Pours deep burgundy-brown with a creamy light-tan head. Tingly carbonation up front, creamier toward the finish. Light to medium body. Very nice roasty aromas. Flavors were pretty nice as well. Chocolate, coffee, sweet milk, and light maple syrup. Mild bitterness in the finish, like bitter coffee. Espresso and cream in the aftertaste. Nice porter.

Ballast point recently showed up in Colorado and so I picked this up. Black, whoa, shocking. Smells good and like a porter should but what strikes me is the flavor. Robust and strong flavor, almost like a stout, very nice. I may need to buy another to make a final judgment but this was cool. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-04-2008 06:16:30

1/26/09 From the bottle. Aroma is chocolatey with a dark fruit background that is nearly perfect. Appearance is dark brown with a low cream colored head. Flavor is light and chocolatey with almost no bittering. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, with very low carb texture and almost no toast astringency. Overall, about a easy drinking as a porter gets, this beer is a great find.
