Commercial Description:
Ballast Point Brother Levonian Saison is named for the late Dave Levonian, a San Diegan who was a great homebrewer, an avid beer enthusiast and generally just a really good person. Ballast Point is donating all of the money from the beer to his daughter’s college fund.

Draft. A golden beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of citrus, brettanomyces, and a light touch of malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of citrus, herbs, and light malts, as well as a touch of brettanomyces, leading to a citrusy finish.

From tap at Pizza Port in Solana Beach. Pours clear and golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is light peppery saison yeasty. Dry yeasty and subdued malt flavoured. Light spiced yeasty base flavour. Ends smooth with a persisting yeasty touch and subdued bitterness.

GABF 09. Pours a crackery dull golden with a modest cobwebby white head. Aroma is spicy phenolic, lost of lemon zest, some doughy malts, a bit thin and not much going on. Flavor is pretty light- saison yeasty phenolics, light lemon, grainy, toast, cobwebby and some slight stale or oldness, orange hints in the end with some more spice phenol and earth- somewhat clean and very light. Ok.

Sample at San Diego Brewing Company. This beer is the same recipe as San Diego’s Summer Lover. The beer is a clear golden color with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Thin rings of lacing. The aroma is sweet bananas, spices and yeast. Light-bodied with a soft and sweet mouthfeel. Fruity and spicy with notes of bananas and clove, as well as some yeast and malt. The finish is fruity with a lingering spice aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

On tap at O’brien’s. This great summer beer pours with a golden-orange body topped by a medium thick to thick head with lots of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a nice grassy note, some clove and a light fruitiness. Light bodied, smooth and a touch dry. A very nice beer to commemerate the late, great Dave Levonian. You will be missed.
