Draught. Syrah Barrel-aged ! Deep chestnut with small, dense yelllow-brownish head. Sweet-vanilla, somehow brandy notes (rather than wine), very good reforming the classical Doppelbock aromas. Slight sourish-winegrapey flavour, sweet-sour in PERFECT balance, and alcohol swarming faintly throughout. Ends long raisiny. Very full-bodied, slick, viscuous. WOW. No German would dream this up. This is where California shows real genius.

Jan 1, 2008 Draft at San Diego Brewing Co...syrah barrel aged. Dark amber; small head. Lots of rich sour and wine flavors with some big dark roasted and sweet malt flavors and strange fruit. Unique, funky and complex and for me quite tasty.

Quite frankly, the combo of syrah barrel & doppelbock didn’t work for me. THe dry red wine character didn’t do well w/ the maltiness of the beer

Oct 20, 2007 Tried from Syrah barrel aged tap at Ballast Point’s 11th anniversary celebration. Super dark brown with a hint of red. A little bit of tartness from the syrah barrel. Microbubble head. A bit of barrel aged oxidation and oak aroma. Not bad, but not my favorite of the event.
