Commercial Description:
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Here is yet another big IPA that I’ve been waiting (semi-patientingly) to sample. I finally got my chance at the Craft Ale House, and it did not disappoint. The unique trait I found with this beer was the oddly light body. I was not expecting this beer to go down so similarly like iced tea or Kool-Aid. The body was amazingly light, and was completely unexpected. That characteristic makes this IPA a little more dangerous than others. I think I could sit at the bar or at home and drink one of these right after another. And that could lead to some qusi-undesired results. The beer pours a light golden color. It sports a white head that laces around the glass the entire way down to the bottom. The nose has that West Coast IPA feeling, with lots of hops, grapefruit, pine and hop resin. The flavors are well-balanced and extremely delicious, with a ton of crisp and floral hops and notes of grass, grapefruit, lemon zest, earth, light bread and a good balance of light malt. The finish really stings the palate, with crisp hop character. This is one outstanding IPA. I wish this was more widely available here in southeastern PA. I could really use some more of it!

Bottle t h a n k s again to YaMar. Pours a clear yellow beer with a nice head. Aroma is grapefruit and pine, extremely hoppy. This compares to Hopslam. Bitter dry finish, very nice beer!

Great I.P.A. This one was a bit travelled and I will definitely try it again and re-rate it fresh. fruity aromas and flavours, more diverse than the standard citrus/pine US IPA and nice underlaying maltiness.

Huge fruit/lemon nose, pours nice off yellow with off white head. Smells of depp citrus hops, and taste is complex. Upfront is mango, lemon, apricot, and orange with a quick blast that leads into a slight bittering aftertaste. Excellent IPA, unlike any other!

Bottle from a trade with Daknole. Pours dark golden color with off white head. Citrusy hop aroma with lots of grapefruit. Lots of hop bitterness but not overdone. Grapefruit rind is the dominant flavor with light maltiness. Medium body with average carbonation. Excellent. Thanks Dak.

Let me start by saying, this could be my favorite IPA of all time. I was lucky enough to score a 1/6 bbl of this stuff for me draft system, and boy does it go quick. Pale golden, somewhat orange in color, with very little lacing, disappearing in minutes. The taste is all citrus; grapefruit, apricot, and melon flavors, with plenty of acidity. Hops are all there, and a good amount of crisp bite. The drinkability of this beer is like no other, every time I put the glass down, my mind thinks to automatically grab for another gulp. There are very few IPA’s out there that can match Sculpin.

Bomber. Citrus aroma is fantasic. Sweet mago lights up the nose. Cooper body with good head a sugar coat of lace. Dry citrus hop with some sugary malt. Not much to say just good, cool and crisp on palate.

22 oz. bottle courtesy of agl108. Pours a hazy gold with a smallish off-white head. A powerful aroma of grapefruits, apricots, peaches, lemons, and resiny pine. Medium-bodied and sticky. Tongue-strippingly harsh. There is a touch of caramel upfront taste-wise, but the flavor is predominantly hoppy. Loads of grapefruits, apricots, and peaches in the mix. A bit of warming alcohol throughout. Quite tasty.
