jasonp (1447), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA Aug 5, 2008 Sampled at O’Briens - RBSG ’08. Cloudy, muddy dark brown with a small, fading head. Caramel, mocha, wood and hint of tart/sourness in the nose. Like the aroma, the flavor starts with notes of mocha, caramel, wood, light tobacco and ends with a bit of saltiness and medium tartness/sour acidity - which works well. Medium to light bodied (perhaps the bugs dried this up a bit) with soft carbonation. Well-done.
JoeMcPhee (3899), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Nov 27, 2008 Tap at Hamilton’s. Deep black beer with a thick creamy tan head. Lightly smoky with a soft cocoaish character and a bit of light lactic tartness. Warming intensifies the tartness quite a bit. Flavour is quite oaky and vineous. Lots of light vanilla and a bit of tannic character. Soft cocoa and a light roastiness. Dusty and fairly herbal. Flavour becomes quite vineious as it warm. Not very stouty at all. Lots of lactic character. It’s a very strange beast. The whisky and woodiness are very subtle considering how tart the beer is. doubleo (966), San Diego, California, USA Sep 16, 2008 On-tap at the Linda Vista location. Pours dark brown/black with a good size, light brown head, sheet lace. Smells of sour malts as well as roasty malts and some sweetness from the wood and bourbon. Tastes of sour malt with some wood flavor on the back half. Not much sweetness or vanilla from the wood. The flavor is a bit of a miss for me as well.Medium body, good carbonation. alexanderj (1420), San Diego, California, USA Sep 13, 2008 On tap; black in color with a light brown head. Aroma of bourbon, alcohol, wood and roasted malt/cocoa. Flavor was a bit of a miss; not terrible, but just not as quality as it could be. Flavor was dominated by alcohol, bourbon/whiskey and a sourness. Roasted malt present, but the beer seemed to be dominated by the aging. Ztaproom (1), San Diego, California, USA does not count Sep 13, 2008 My new favorite. I had it on draft and on cask in the same day at The Tap Room. It went perfect with cheesecake hopscotch (4679), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Aug 20, 2008 Draft... RBSG ‘08... This beer rocks!... Pitch black with a creamy, khaki head and terrific retention. Slowly leaves thick, creamy lacing on the glass. The aroma is a churning eddy of buttermilk and coffee with traces of chocolate and bourbon. Full-bodied and velvety with very restrained carbonation. Mostly acidic flavor provides a gentle note of sourmash. A touch chocolaty and not very sweet. Finishes chocolaty and tangy with a hint of bourbon. I like the subdued whiskey in this 30% barrel-aged blend.
