Commercial Description:
It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

Pours a pale yellow orange color with a head that faded as quick as the pour. The nose is full of malted honey with some hints of hops. The initial flavor is sweet honey with a grainy finish and the subtle notes of wheat. This is an interesting beer in style, initially i was expecting something a bit more robust and balanced. I was surprised that it is not that watery and the flavor leaves a nice impression.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a clear dark gold color, with a small off white head. Smells a little grainy with a sublte hop and malt mix. Overall very mild aroma. The flavor is real malty, almost had a caramel or cinnamon character to it. Not much of a hop presence at all. The cereal grain was also noticeable but covered up decently by its sweetness. Not a great drinking beer, but not a drainpour either.

Light malt and grainy aroma. Golden color with a small white head. Light bitterness in the beginning. Flavor fades in the finish. Light palate

Draft... RBSG’08... Clear yellow ale with a small, creamy, white head. Great retention. Nearly nondescript aroma and flavor. Medium-bodied and a touch oily with mild carbonation. Well-balanced. Watery, moderately bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours pale yellow with medium head. Aroma is extremly nuty. Peanuts were all that i could think about at first. Little dry and just slightly bitter. Carbonation is medium to strong - just what I feel it should b in here. Really original beer for me so far. Pleasant and drinkable. I bet there must be some kind of snack that would fit perfect fo this one. Some cheese maybe? I’ve enjoyed this one.

On tap. Flavor seemed dialed down, but was interesting and complex with notes of bubble gum and bananas. Poured yellow just like the name. Hard to detect much aroma. Not a lot of hops in this one.
