Commercial Description:
It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

12 oz bottle at Capital Ale House Downtown. Clear light golden with aroma of light grainey malts. Grainy malt and light honey flavors with some fruity yeast character. Bit of spicey hops. Medium to light body with low carbonation. Finish is moderately dry with a lot of bready character. Bitterness is there and is pushing a pale ale, but I would still classify this as a Kolsch.

deep caramel malty aroma. Golden yellow brew with an average size foamy white head. Bitter bourbon woody flavor, deeeeep burn with vanilla notes.Extreme dry. Nutty aftertaste.

Comes from the glass a yellow-orange with not much head. Aroma is of acidic apple and a very floral hops scent. Flavor is a bit corny with some grassy hops and a slight sour flavor. Very boring and nothing outstanding here.

22 oz bottle. Bummer. Not quite a drain pour, but a total disappointment. Aroma is small, bitter. Chunky head fell quickly. Tastes of grass and peanutbutter. Bland and thin. Bummed.

This is a nice kolsch-type beer. Faintly hazy golden amber, it has a medium off-white head steadily shrinking to a thin ring and wisps. The smell is nice, grain, bread, citrus, grapefruit, hints of honey, pine. In taste, it is light but very tasty, with grain, crackers, citrus, 7-up, hints of grass and pine. It has light sweetness with bitterness in good balance. It’s \quite refreshing and clean.

Pours a thin watered down golden. Barely and head or foam to my pour. Very bitter, very strong hops. Basically gross, not very much fun here.
