I found Soviet beer really awful in the 1970s, but this was quite drinkable even if unremarkable. Simple nose of sweet malts and caramel. Simple but quite pleasant flavor of sweet malts and caramel, with the faintest hint of something new from the rye, possibly a licorice note. Average mouthfeel, and a little more hops in the finish would have helped a lot. Worked will with a Russian dinner at Russian Samovar, especially with the heavy duck dishes. Dark amber in color with a small head. The aroma was definate caramel, sweet malts, and I experianced the slightest hint of licorice. The flavor had a malty sweetness with little hoppy biterness. Finish was thin and clean but nothing that lingers.
Not a bad beer, but no real character for a Dunkel. badgerben (3605), Blaine, Minnesota, USA

Not much rye in the taste, but I think it added plenty of sweetness. This somehow manages to be very sweet, but just bitter enough to avoid travelling into soy sauce territory. A little carmel-like finish. joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 19, 2007 At first when I found out this was made with rye malt I got excited, since I love rye beers, but the rye was hardly detectable. That being said a nice malty aroma makes way to a smooth and fairly well balanced flavor that replicates a nice German dunkel. Good but not great. Firemoose15 (542), Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA

Flavor was a nice light roasted malt with tinge of sugar to it. Palate was light and watery a little thicker it could’ve been. Overall I liked it and would buy it. Thanks I believe to Degarth for sending this to me way back. brentfeesh (1039), Gadsden, Alabama, USA

The aroma had toasted nuts and roasted grains with a light sweetness. Tasty brew. A strong nutty presence with toasted and roasted malts. A nice malty sweetness to boot. It’s definitely malt forward with no noticeable hops. Creamy medium mouth feel. Drinkable and good. faroeviking (6126), BjórtjóðveldiðBjórheimBjórsins, Faroe Islands
