Nov 27, 2009 500 ml bottle from the LCBO. gift pack. pours black with a tan head. very muted aroma of dried fall leaves, cara malt, touch of roast. the flavour is better. the malt body is decent and the hops come in near the finish. a touch thin and a bit tinny (which i hate). not my thing.

Nov 25, 2009 Sample in plastic cup at Bevmo, Scottsdale. Dark brown with ring head. Chocolate syrup nd roasted chocolate aroma. Chocolatey with roasted chocolate syrup and grassy dirty bitter finish with medicinal fizzy cloying.

Nov 21, 2009 Aroma of caramel and milk chocolate. Appearance is black with moderately carbonated mocha head. Flavor was nearly identical to the "4" (which is a doppelbock). I cannot really recall any differences in these beers, granted, I tried the doppelbock around 1 month ago. This is is also fairly sweet for the style, not very roasty. Palate was bubbly. A beer with an identity crisis, and hopefully not the best Russia has to offer.

Nov 20, 2009 Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and licorice. Sweet and roasty malt flavor with some chocolate and licorice. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a soft mouthfeel.

Nov 18, 2009 bottle- pours an almost black color with a light brown fizzy head. Faint malty, liquorice, grape juice aroma with a hint of smoke. Toasty soy sauce flavor, slighty sweet and nutty with a lightly salty finish.

Nov 15, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark mahogany beer with a beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of licorice. The flavor is sweet and smoke. The palate is dry and bitter. Overall a good beer.

Nov 14, 2009 500 ml bottle in gift pack from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a snifter glass.
App.: Deep brown-black with a so-so tan head.
Aroma: Nice rich sweet chocolate, vanilla, dried fruits, light nuttiness, some coffee, some molasses, some bright berries, a little wood, a light soy sauce/savoury note with a hint of fish (?!),
Palate: Medium+ body and virtually no carbonation for a very silky, smooth feel.
Flav.: Grape-like fruitiness, a bit stale, many of the inviting aromas don’t come through, some almost-burnt cracker, a bit of leafy hops, a little coffee, some light alcohol; lightly sweet with balancing bitterness and a lightly fruity/malty finish.
The classic bait and switch: the attractive nose lures you in and then leaves you with it’s fat friend.

Nov 13, 2009 very dark pour with a frothy tan head. Aroma of smoke, and dark soy sauce, and roastd malt. Flavor is quite smoky, and roasty with more of the soy. Not bad, but not great.
