Rune (2744), Tromsø, Norway Mar 24, 2007 500ml bottle from a superstore in Арха́нгельск, Russia (thanks to Per-Einar). Pours a body black as pitch under a huge brownish head with lots of bubbles blanketing the glass. Rounded aroma of dark malts. Quite well made brew with malty keenness and roasted barley. Some hints of anise and chocolate break through in a long flavoured tail. Good and lasting mouthfeel (23.03.2007). RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Mar 13, 2007 Thanks to bditty187 for this bottle.
Pours a deep black with a dense one finger, dark tan, head. The foam settles very slowly to a thick cap, leaving behind a nice sheeting of lace.
Smell; dark roasted malts with a little chocolate and coffee. Some dark fruits are present as well, with figs and plums. There’s a bit of a nutty aroma present as this gets a bit warmer.
Taste; the roasted malts and coffee flavors are there, but they’re a bit subdued compared to the nose. Some chocolate and sweet cream meld pretty nicely with figs and plums, and almost make this a bit to sweet for my tastes. I don’t get any of the nuttiness that I picked up in the aroma, which is to bad.
Mouthfeel is a bit on the thinner side for a Baltic Porter, but it may actually help out the drinkability, which is pretty damn good.
I believe this is the first Russian beer that I’ve ever had, and it’s pretty darn good. If it’s ever available in my area, I’ll definitely pick some up on occasion. Nejhleader (924), Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 12, 2007 Very Yummy. Nice thick black colour, had a sweet nice caramel aroma to it, nice sweet almost chocolaty taste. I enjoyed this brew. Ughsmash (3978), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Mar 11, 2007 Bottled, BB 4.28.07. Poured clear, deeper cola brown with a nice initial cap of caramel head that recedes to a thin layer after a couple minutes. Aroma picked up drier, artificially-sweetened dark chocolates, molasses, some dark fruit, and an overall level of roast near burnt... decent. Flavor began with heavier, almost resiney burnt coffee and molasses malts... dark chocolate and sweetener emerge toward the middle, with a moderate-high level of coffee bitterness... sweet, burnt finish leaves chocolate and mild bitterness. Fills out decently on the palate.. a tad tacky at times. OK brew. faroeviking (6016), Republica Vikingo de las, Faroe Islands Mar 6, 2007 Bottle. Thick clear black colour with an average lasting off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Bitter-sweet flavour of roasted malt and some bitterness. Nice dry roasty aftertaste. A good mass produced Russian porter. Jwasciuk (194), Lowell, Michigan, USA Mar 6, 2007 pours muddy black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma is of cookies, roasted malts, dark chocolate, brothy with plum and smoke esters. Flavor is well balanced, roasted malts and coffee. Finishes on the sweeter side. Light to medium bodied, watery and oily, softly carbonated. Especially nice for only $1.99 joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA Mar 3, 2007 500ml. Bottle
Different bottle than in picture. Blue and black label with a long neck.
Baltika 6 poured black with a 1+ finger tan creamy head. Opaque except when held to the light there are some mahogany highlights around the sides and bottom of the glass.
Smell is a lot different than I thought it was going to be for whatever reason. It smells of molasses, dark fruits (plum) and some dark roasted malts. The molasses comes through the strongest. Smells pretty good.
The taste is good. I thought it may have been to sweet from the smell but it’s not. The taste comes through as dark fruits up front gollowed by roasted malts. A touch of sweetness follows at the end with a nice aftertaste. Slight bitterness even things out nicely. The sweetness increases as the beer warms.
Mouthfeel is good on here as well. It’s got a medium-heavy body that coats nicely. Slick feeling as I sip. Coats my throat. Smooth.
Drinkability is above average. It would be a little higher except for the sweetness. A couple of these would be more than enough.
Sampled 10/8/06 rmussman (905), California, USA Mar 2, 2007 A very interesting beer. Aroma is nice with lots of roasted chocolate and spices hints. Appearance is dark brown with a thick head. Mouthfeel is more bitter than i like. Flavor is decent with lots of chocolate and spices involved.
