jasonp (1504), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA Nov 20, 2005 Pours a clear black (dark ruby when held up to light) with a thick, beige head. Sweet caramel and roastiness in the nose. Pleasantly sweet with a strong presence of caramel then comes notes of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Some roasty, hoppy bitterness shows up in the finish. Alcohol content very well hidden. Medium bodied with a very smooth texture and moderate, fine beaded carbonation - quite appropriate for the style. Enjoyable. ezra456 (39), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Nov 18, 2005 poured out a pitch black with a dark brown highlight. good head with spiderweb lacing. raisin/coffe aromas. raisin flavors were too strong and took away from the subtle coffe flavors. overall, a barely wine fan would like it. not my bag. tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Nov 12, 2005 According to wawood this is the best of the Russian line of Baltika. It’s gotta be better than the #9 which wasn’t impressive, to say the least. Great ring of lacing here. Appearance gets good marks. Brown sugar aroma. Good flavor. Nice and rich toffee and chocolate. Dessert type quality. A little rough around the edges, which seems to be consistent with Russian beers. However, very enjoyable overall. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Nov 8, 2005 Pours looking like a coke on steroids, like boom, then settles down: nice head ring. some lacing : Some burnt qualities in taste, slight warmth in this one : A good bitter porter, not as creamy as most but can hit the spot on the right time + day, a russian classic! TerryR (382), Oswego, Illinois, USA Nov 7, 2005 Near black with ruby highlights. Large tan head slowly retreats. Beautiful lacing. Aroma of sweet malt and fruit. Sweet chocolate flavor with coffee notes. Somewhat port like. Lingering dry cocoa finish. Very nice. Wiseblood (658), Clarksville, Tennessee, USA Nov 6, 2005 Ruby-brown with a foamy, tan head. Aromas are chocolate, nutty and sweet. Smooth, with flavors of burnt chocolate, smoky coffee, and brown sugar. Good balance with a bitter finish. Not as heavy as most porters and worth trying again. BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Oct 27, 2005 (BJCP Class) Wow my First Russian Beer. Strong molasses aroma and taste. The strong Alcohol also was very present. The overall aroma was very reminiscent of a Strong Ale. Lots of fruity esters this was a very good beer. And I hope to share with others this awesome dark Porter from Russia. YK23 (253), Haifa, Israel Oct 21, 2005 Updated: Mar 5, 2007A bitter-sweet porter (more bitter then sweet), more coffish then chocolaty in the flavor, malty, alcohol, not very smooth and easy to drink but still one of my favorits because you get a good value for your money, it’s pretty cheap.
