Commercial Description:
A traditional dark beer based on old recipes. "Baltika" brews this beer with the best dark and light malts with the addition of superior hop types and a special strain of yeast. Crystal-clear water and the secret touch of "Baltika"'s brewers make this a beer of unsurpassable quality.
The ingredients are water, caramel malt and burnt roasted malt, maltose syrup and hops. 17°

Pours dark but see through ruby. One finger thick mocha colored head that dissipates into wispy lace. Smells like coffee and burnt malt. Also kind of smells like something burning on the stove but not necessarily in a bad way. If I had to describe the taste I would say it is like banana bread bake with the peel intact and coffee grounds thrown in. Definitely has a bitter banana peel and coffee ground aspect to it. This beer is definitely aggressively balanced to say the least. I would say if you are not a barrel chested Russian man this would be on the verge of being undrinkable. If Stoli is the vodka for virile Russian men, Baltika 6 is it’s brewed equivalent.

Bottle... Poured a deep, dark brown with amber highlights and a light brown head. Aroma of hazelnuts, and roasted cocoa, malt. Smooth, light palate with a strong smoked character to the flavors. A little bit of alcohol and hop bitterness that balanced the sweet malt tones. Finished almost like a dark lager/bock, malty and sweet with also an added soy sauce character.

Remek!

Dark brown color with brown, frothy head with quite good retention. Maltose sypup, roasted chocolate, notes of dark fruits in the aroma. Rotund roasted malty character. Well balanced medium sweet burnt flavors with dry, little bit alcoholic, herbal aftertaste. Medium to full bodied, dense texture, smooth carbonation. Potent porter indeed.

Pours a deep deep brown with a thin tan head that leaves ok retention... Aroma of licorice, roasted malts, not overly sweet aroma at all... Flavor of some green herbs, slightly roasty, sweet candy like flavor, note of licorice, dark fruits, cherry, faint tartness, subtly complex... Medium bodied, medium mouthfeel, good beer, less full than i expected

Bottle, poured at NZ Beerfest ’09. Pours deep ruby, with a brown head. Aromas are quite weak for this style, but theres a bit of roast malt and some yeast. A smoky flavoured roast malt flavour dominates, balanced with a medium sweetness. Good full mouthfeel, not watery like I was expecting. Chocolate finish which begs for another sip. Quite nice.

1 pint bottle. Poured a dark brown, nearly black, with a thick, relatively short lived, light brown head. Aroma of brown sugar, hickory, malt, alcohol, and peaches. Smooth mouthfeel with a distinctive coffee bitterness. Accents of brown sugar prevalent with malt, red apple, and peaches subtly hinting. I also get a distinct wheatgrass aftertaste. Truly an interesting Russian porter with more than a few levels of flavor.
