Pours a very dark birch-beer brown with about 1" of almost perfect-looking, tight tan head that slowly recedes to about 1/4" and stays put. Aroma of rich molasses, raisins and chocolate. Mouthfeel soft and creamy, yet also dry and kind of prickly. Nice rings of lacing. Flavor to me was mostly a dry chocolate, with the moderately sweet molasses and raisins emerging as well. Pretty tasty but was hoping for a bolder, richer flavor. Didn’t really care for the dryishness either. There is a mild alcohol burn as well. redlem (1155), Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 19, 2003 An opaque dark beer with a large creamy tan rocky head. By wafting this has a crisp hop aroma, by sticking your nose in the glass the roasted malt is detected. A spring hop taste with roasted malt. Nice lacing, perception is that this is thin but it feels right at a deceptive 7% ABV. A very drinkable dark beer with an almost citrus quality. Kåstå (1149), Mol, Belgium

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 12, 2003 Light brown head and black colour. Sweet aroma with notes of coffe and liquorice. Taste is rather sweet again with hints of coffee and liquorice (also raisins plus ryebread?). Not much bitterness in the finish. Easy drinking but a little too much sweetness. mephisto (1144), Taiwan

Roasted nut aroma, molasses, and chocolate. No hop derived aromas that I could detect. Medium/full body, light carbonation, nice mouthfeel. Decidedly on the sweet side with caramel maltiness dominating. Still, some spicy bitterness comes on at the finish for balance. I’d like a little more hop character, but this is still a good Baltic. Served at cellar temp, it pours black with ruby highlights and a loose, frothy, beige head. On the nose are chocolate and dark roast with fruity wine-like undertones. Light to medium-bodied and almost creamy with a roasted, moderately bitter finish that includes a touch of alcohol warmth. Sweet, chocolaty, roasted malt with a noticeable hop bitterness blending into the roasted finish. It lingers sweet and roasty with notes of burnt sugar and bittering hops. Perhaps, it’s a tad sweeter than I might prefer, but it is a tasty brew. At less than $2 for a 500 ml bottle, it’s also quite a bargain. piscator34 (1131), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 22, 2007 Near black in colour with medium-to-high carbonation. Aromas of lightly roasted malts, caramel, and a bit of molasses. Malt forward in the mouth (as expected), but with a surprising amount of caramel. A touch of fruit and toffee as well, along with some black chocolate. The snappy finish makes for a fairly drinkable pint. Pretty good.
