Finish is chocolate and a light bitterness. A fruity ester I can’t attribute. It’s not Gonzo, but it’s good. heemer77 (4312), Savannah, Missouri, USA

A large light tan head tops that black beer. Pears and a hint of fresh tobacco in the aroma. The taste is smoky malt with nuts and some vanilla in the finish. Hints of figs. This gets richer with some coffee as you go through the glass. Creamy mouthfeel. tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 17, 2004 Sweet, nutty, marzipan aroma. Dark brown body with ruby-brown highlights. Tan/brown head recedes to cover with some lacing. Mild, roastiness to the sweet flavour with a lasting nutty finish. Creamy and smooth texture but somewhat still and light bodied. Bottle enjoyed with Enkerli and others. BBB63 (4274), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 4, 2003 Nearly opaque, tint of brown. Almost no head. Full bodied. Heavy malty aroma of roasted malt, molasses, coffee, and semisweet chocolate. Also detected a light hoppy tone of flowers and pine, smoke, vanilla, and banana hints too. Heavy sweetness on the initial taste with coffee and molasses tones, tastes like some English strong ales I have without the fruitiness. Creamy and soft mouthfeel, moderate alcohol feel. A respectable porter. Slightly recommended. cgarvieuk (4222), Edinburgh, Scotland

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 21, 2002 There is a caramelised brown sugar taste, but it’s a very welcome taste, alongside rotten bananas and damp leather and dark red fruits that are impossible to identify, and a huge alcohol wollop. There is licorice in the nose, some coffee, lots of red fruits, and a hint of bitter chocolate. This is a very warming, complex and rewarding beer that is certainly worth hunting down - I got mine from the disorganised online site www.onlyfinebeer.co.uk. I’m impressed that it’s not top fermented - I hadn’t thought it was possible to develop a beer this meaty and complex at low temperatures. Rating 7.5 Skinnyviking (4189), Copenhagen, Denmark

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2007 Sampled during Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Friday evening beer tasting in St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-haze dark brown brew with a decent tan head that really sticks around and even has good lacing. Aroma of rich milk chocolate, campfire wood, roasted coffee and molasses. Taste is smooth, creamy with flavors of rich dark coffee, molasses, vanilla and bittersweet dark chocolate. Finish is slightly metallic semi-sweet with a roasted coffee/molasses aftertaste that lingers around after the finish.
