Commercial Description:
Also chosen as one of the top 10 beers in America for 1999. Inspired by the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, this beer delivers lots of flavor for a light-bodied ale. Rich, roasted malt flavors are subtly accented with aromatic hops, producing a well-balanced English Mild Ale that is not bitter.
Terrific with Maine lobster & seafood.

Bottle. Light caramel malt aroma. Cloudy brown amber color with small head. Light caramel malt flavor. Very light - a bit watery. Light but enjoyable.

Hard to get excited about this. Inoffesnive nose. Light brown cloudy pour, but thin, with thin head and little residual lacing ater the head vanished. Lightly nutty, lightly malty, stale and, unlike the other reviewers, my bottle was slightly flat rather than fizzy. Thin in the mouth. On balance, uninteresting.

Gushing bomber: Clear copper with a thick foamy off-white head, light grains and some mustiness in the aroma, fizzy watery texture, starts and ends lightly sweet.

Cold 22oz bottle: Pours a clear dark amber color with a large foamy off white persistent head. Aroma is of rich malts, wood, light fruits and notes of smoke. Tastes dirty. Soapy texture; over-carbonated. Astringent ending.

Any first impressions?
-Ample foam sits over the orange ruby, artfully lacing.
-Toasted bread and dusty fruitiness fails to entice the nostrils.
-Subtle nutty sweetness is overthrown by dry toastiness.
-Energetic effervescence plows through the frail maltiness.

What if you dig deeper?
-Stale yeast bothers with its metallic twinge, even appearing in the nose.
-Almost roasty and ashy, the adamantly dry finish is emboldened by supporting herbal hops.
-The maltiness could have developed some sweetness to balance this out, and make this more pleasant.
-Terribly boring and dusty for their base beer to many recipes. I don’t know if it’s always been like this, but I can’t say I enjoyed this one. I will cross my fingers that their Peach and Ginger aren’t tainted with this stale character.

Bottle; no date.

Dark ruby pour. Small, off-white head. Average malt aroma of hay and straw with notes of burnt hay and roasted malts. The flavor is bitter with a slightly sweet backbone. Somewhat dry. Light body. Average.

Fiery red pour with a uniform head. Strange burnt plastic note hovers over the otherwise pleasant nose. Like burning wires really. The body really lives up to the style - mild as can be, but bordering on bland. Some light malt notes - dough and caramel. Easy drinker but nothing to search out.

Pours deep amber into a shaker. Slight off-white head quickly recedes to skim rim. Biscuit and malt notes. Light-bodied, but flavorful with slight bitter finish. Very sessionable -- wish I’d picked up more.
