An impresssion that remains unfortunately, the spritzy, bubbly, mouthfeel combined with a nearly total lack of bitterness and an emphasized honey flavor makes it appear more like an "alco-soda" than a beer really. A disappointment, considering the heavy price, I would like it better if the price matched its attraction. Jukkabro (3039), Tampere, Finland
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 9, 2006 Dark red, near black colored, little light brown head. Strong raspberry in sweet aroma, mild alcohol and licorice also there. Medium to full bodied. Flavor has strong licorice with raspberries and medium alcohol, spices come up also. Strong licorice dominates, maybe slightly too one-dimensional. altonbrownd (1960), Amsterdam, Netherlands
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 22, 2006 Tap at Cafe Krull. Amsterdam. Very black with tight head. A wop of a taste - quite bitter, heavy, syrupy. But also fruity with apple flavors. Ended with a bit of metallic, alcohol flavor. larsga (2980), Oslo, Norway
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 21, 2006 Medium beige head shrinks quickly. Body is black, almost opaque, lighter at edges. Bready, yeasty, licorice and chocolate aroma with milky notes, and faint alcohol. Taste is chocolatey licorice with yeast notes and alcohol heat. Lots of carbonation in the mouth initially. Sweet. Slightly watery. Dry licorice aftertaste. Good but not as good as the "regular" Barbar. (0.33l bottle.) Glouglouburp (2877), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 11, 2006 Dark brown body with a short lived off-white head. Very malty body with toffee and cake flavours. Lots of honey-ish sweetness. Some crunchy peppery spices flavours too. Pretty rough and unsophisticated beer but very effective. Barbar-ian. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 7, 2006 Dark brown coloured with some light carbonation and a large, yet diminshing head. Sweet alcoholic yeasty notes in the aroma, with some more clear honey touches. Full creamy palate, smouth and sweet body. Finish is bitter, roasted malts, and at the end a honey touch with some alcoholic notes. Not as good as I expected, could be more balanced. Fantomas23 (463), Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 5, 2006 Another Barbar beer ordered by the Mrs. I think that she subconsciously correlated the beer with the elephant. This bock is just a little too watery. Otherwise, it has a hint of sweetness that combines well with a relatively smoky taste and aroma. johninmelb (695), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 13, 2006 Pours like a coke. Smells a little bit like one too, although yeasty as well. Flavour is fruity with some spice and malt and a lingering caramel finish. Like a few belgians, its over carbed, which is a shame. Nevertheless, a nice beer.
