Dark orange, murky pour, light off white head. Wort-like aroma with hints of molasses. Flavor has some ripening vegetable notes to it, pumpkins, sweet potatoes perhaps. Hint of caramel in the back end. BIt of astringent bitterness in the back end dampens my enthsiasm somewhat - almost tastes like it is a bit unfinished. THe sweetness turns a bit cloying near the end. Mouthfeel is thick enough for the style. Aurelius (2648), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Nov 3, 2006 Sweet, caramel, graham cracker and wet wood aroma. Orangey-gold, webby head. Bad label, and is there a reason that they can’t afford to put anything on these bottles but brass-colored caps -- that’s just bad marketing. Tangy, malt cracker/biscuit flavor, very metallic -- this is my fifth beer from this brewery tonight [and my last, Mom - :) ] and the thing that they all had in common was a metallic, oversparged bitterness that was trying to substitute for complexity. Not very sweet. Light cereal. Bitterness overstays its welcome. Thanks to PorterPounder for splitting his toolbox with me. Marzenish. TerryR (383), Oswego, Illinois, USA
| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Nov 2, 2006 At a friend’s house - no evidence of the toolbox. Light golden with virtually no head. Light malt and corn flavors. Had a very mettalic taste that detracted from the beer. Bring back Hans Kessler. Homebrewerguy (284), Oil City, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Aug 10, 2006 My third sampling from "The Toolbox". C’mon people, what’s you’re problem with these beers? Sure, they’re not Dogfishhead quality, but they are good everyday drinkers. This beer reminds me of an English bitter more than anything with it’s dark sugery flavor, mild hopping, and dark amber appearance. I could drink a lot of these. Apparently, some people want just one.....to knock they’re socks off. Cornfield (4945), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 19, 2006 My bottle was a single buy, and not part of the "Historical Beers of America" that the other raters are simply raving about. I actually found this to be a decent drink. Pouring a deep gold body with a minimalist’s head, it has a buttered toast aroma. That’s maintained in the flavor, along with some corn (C’mon - It is Huber, after all) and a very modest amount of herbal bitterness. Good lawnmower beer.

My father got this wooden tool box thing of beer for xmas last year. "hey, you want half of this?" Are they that bad, Pop? Twist off caps...beer don’t no.2!
Dark orange amber color. I can get a small whiff of a malt sweetness. Not of reconizable barley, but some kind of malt. Cheat Malt. very cheap! No hop flavor can be detected. Mostly malt flavor. Very light bodied. the money must have gone into the marketing and not the ingredients. SledgeJr (2961), Omaha, Nebraska, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Jun 26, 2006 In the bottle from the ridiculous wooden tool box packaging. This is a lousy beer. Steam beers are easy to make and there is no excuse to produce a weak one. Pours dark amber with an off-white head. The aroma and the flavor is way too much corn. This just does not resemble a steam beer. eeck! I know that "historically" poor people made beer using whatever was available, but that doesn’t mean it tasted good. jtw (942), farmington, Michigan, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 26, 2006 deep reddish copper color with a little head.... malty sweet aroma with a grapelike presence and a little bit of stinky hops behind it all. plain nutty bready flavor, some vinous earthy flavors as well, but nothing worth remembering.
