Bottle from sampler set. Pours a dark brown color with large off-white head that diminished quickly with good lacing. Good complex aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Good sweet malty flavor with good finish.

Ah, my first other beer in the style of Anchor Steam. A nice amber colored, pretty malty and dry in the finish. Not Anchor but not terrible.

Bright clear amber color with a thin weak off white head. Stale bread and caramel aromas. Tinny fruit and light toffee flavors. Dry finish. not much to this one.

Bottle. Amber bodied with a moderate foamy white head. Nose is surprisingly better than expected. Malty and semi-sweet with caramel notes and light hops. Maybe some dried fruity notes as well. Taste is a bit worse off with sweet malts, light caramel and watery hops. It’s not too bad but more weak than anything. Lighter fruit notes throughout this. Body is medium with moderate carbonation feel. Finishes with more dried fruits, sweet malts, and hints of caramel. At times it conjured Apples & Cinnamon Oatmeal notes. Not too horrible and it’s a rare California Common.

From the Historic Beers of America sampler. Dark amber beer with a fizzy head that disappears in an instant. Decent malty aroma. The only other California common beer I have tried was the Anchor Steam, which I did not care for. This was much milder, but had a good malt base. Not much hops. Certainly drinkable, but not much better than average.

A pleasant surprise. Somehow the label led me to expect less. It had a slightly fruity aroma, but it was difficult to find. Almost no head and no carbonation to speak of. It had a sweet fruity flavor to it. Perhaps a bit of toffee and some over ripe apples. All in all it was a pleasant drinking experience.

Bottle. Tawny brown body with no head. Is this flat? Nose is very, very sweet. Taste-sour apple, malt, straw, honey, and some corn like adjuncty flavor (in a good way). Aftertaste is almost peaty, like scotch. Overall this is a bit thin and odd.
