carboloader (300), Houston, Texas, USA Jan 4, 2004 Opaque with a medium sized caramel colored foamy head. Aroma is rather undetectable (may have had too many). Flavor is smokey, roasted coffee, exemplifies the stout category. Not much carbonation. Reminds me of Guinness extra stout without the over-the-top bite and carbonation. Alcohol seems noticeable in flavor, but not offensive at all. Surprisingly good stout. Dare I say exceptional! Still could have more coffee flavor given the name, but overall one of the better stouts I’ve encountered. If ever passing through on I-84 you should definitely stop by -- and not simply because I grew up here! Barley Brown’s is well worth the visit for the outstanding brews and warm, friendly staff eager to discuss good beer. JMFG (1173), Florida, USA Sep 17, 2007 On tap at brewpub. Pours a very dark chestnut brown with a thin dark tan head. Sharp coffee aroma with a light nuttiness. The aroma more reminiscent of fresh coffee grounds rather than brewed coffee. Coffee bitterness up front, backed by some roasted malts. I liked the coffee character here, it was supporting role rather than the focus. Reminded me more of a porter in regard to mouthfeel. BuckeyeBoy (1181), Boise, Idaho, USA Jun 25, 2007 On Tap at the Brewpub pours out a nice black topped with a tan head. A nice coffee aroma and some roast malt. Not bad at all. skoisirius (480), Seattle, Washington, USA Feb 27, 2008 On tap at the pub. Pours mainly black, with a hint of brown and a quickly fading tanned head. Aroma brings out a light chocolate sense, along with fresh espresso, and somewhere in there I get a hint at vanilla. The main flavors are mild, blending coffee, espresso, and roast. Fairly velvety smooth on the palate, a nicely done little hop kick finishes out this balanced coffee/espresso beer. A slightly burnt lingering flavor continues to ride out after each sip as well. I’m starting to notice that all of Barley Brown’s beers are BALANCED, and every once in a while that rocks! 3 for 3 these guys get from me! Indiana_Red (1470), Boise, Idaho, USA Jun 24, 2006 On Tap at the brewpub. Nice dark brown/black with a small tan head. Spotty lacing. Nice dark roasted aroma with a strong coffee slant. Flavor was a good mix of the two. Not particularly heavy or thick. Lingering smokey bitterness. Drinkable.
