IlanMan (514), Winona, Minnesota, USA Mar 21, 2008 Pour was dark amber. Had a medium dark fruity taste and a medium or so malt bill. Had the average hops for an ale and a nice floral finish. Good brew. Would drink again.
amish_caravan (197), Winona, Minnesota, USA Mar 21, 2008 scent of fruit and barley. taste of hops and fruit. nothing too special about this one. General_Gao (2442), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Mar 16, 2008 Draft at the brewpub on Barley John’s 8th Anniversary (3/16/08). 6.6%. Poured a cloudy brown-orange color. The head was off white. Earthy aromas of moss and dried leaves greeted the nose. Smelled a bit like Autumn. This earthiness carried over into the flavor. I tasted wet stone, fall leaves, and green leafy hops. Dry on the tongue with moderate hop bitterness that peaked at about 6 out of 10. Not flashy, but a nice beer nonetheless. islay (401), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 16, 2008 2008 edition, listed as 6.6% ABV. 16 oz. pour, on tap at the brewpub. Tasted during Barley John’s 8th Anniversary celebration on 3-16-08. Bready aroma of toasted malt and citrus. The smell is weak and hard to pin down. Pours a hazy, dark, reddish brown with a cool, bright, orangish gold hue. Small amount of near-white head. Malty, pleasant taste that reminds me more of an English old ale or strong ale rather than any sort of Irish brew. The taste is less toasty than the aroma and alleged Irish heritage suggest, and the beer is sweeter than I expected. Medium body. Smooth and creamy in the palate. Moderate carbonation. Refreshing. Barley John’s Anniversary Ale is a solid though unspectacular beer. A stronger and more interesting aroma would greatly help this product. Saarlander (1448), The Saarland, Germany Jul 16, 2007 Hand bottle received in Mystery swap 2.0. Alot of malt to this one, pours with a slight head, and dark color. Some dark fruit to this one, but malt dominates, an enjoyable brew!
Almost tastes like a port wine.
