Commercial Description:
Dunkel is German for dark, and that’s what this entirely drinkable session beer is. Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law, was passed in 1516, which allowed only malt, hops, yeast and water to be used in brewing beer. In honor of this tradition, we proudly call ours 1516 Dunkel. Prost!

5/20/2009: 1516 Dunkel pours a dark brown color, is transparent, and has a slowly dissipating beige-colored head. The aroma reveals roasted malts and hints of black patent barley. The flavor is sweet and roasty with chocolate, something cherry-like, and a bit of molasses. This medium-bodied beer has a decent level of carbonation and is a fairly decent Dunkel.

Draught (sample) at Barley’s Smokehouse in Columbus, Ohio. Rating #7 for this beer.

Draft at Barleys Smokehouse. Poured clear brown color with an average fizzy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate dark malty aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium toasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Had on tap at the smokehouse. Beautiful pour. Sweet malty aroma. Flavor was nice and sweet up front, pepper in the middle, and a slight roasted bitter finish. This was okay. Somethingin the finish had me puzzled and I cant quite place it.

On draught at the Smokehouse. This brew is a dark brown color with a thin beige head that diminishes to a film steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasted malt aroma with notes of coffee. Medium, smooth body with flavors of toasted malt, moderately bitter coffee and hops. The finish is sweet malt followed by a lingering roasted coffee aftertaste. Not as sweet as many Dunkels but it kind of works.

On tap at the Smokehouse. Pours a clear light brown with a medium tan head. Caramel malt aroma with lager yeast and a bit of fruit. This beer tastes like no dunkel I have ever had. A roasty coffee flavor up front that did not detect in the aroma, followed by sweet malt and a sort of dry finish. This one is a winner!
