Commercial Description:
A rare beer style today, it is inky-brown with a sweet malt nose and flavor. Excellent body and balance. This style of stout was shipped from Britain to the Russian Imperial Court. 1997 & 2000 RAF Gold Medal Winner!

Had on tap at the Smokehouse. Poured dark brown almost black...Tasted like roasted coffee...Nothing else too undstanding to me. I enjoyed it for sure, but its St. Pat’s day you see, and after a while, they all start tasting good!

Thanks to hopdog for the growler sample. Somewhat translucent root beer toned body with a soapy, cream colored head. Aroma has a nice blend of mild coffee, chocolate, light roast, raisins, and cola. Sweet with fruity, plummy malt signatures. Some roast firmly emerges. Also has an interesting phantom bourbon note. Could use more fullness in the body. A decent, somewhat modest Imperial Stout.

Growler acquired in trade with mcallister (thanks!). Poured a dark brown color with an averaged to larger sized tan head. Aromas of roast, light chocolate, some smoke, vanila, and coffee. Tastes follow suit. Bitter coffee finish. Body on the thin side. Lacing left on the glass. I actually found this to be on the weaker side for an Imperial Stout and would have pegged this one as a Stout.

Thanks to hopdog for sharing the growler. Pours a deep black with a creamy light tan head that left a good bit of lacing. Held up great in the growler for a few weeks! Aroma of milk chocolate, hints of coffee, some fresh hops and lots of roasted malts. Flavor of roasted malts, earthy, some toffee, bitter coffee, lots of hop bitterness. Picking up some alcohol i n the flavor. Kind of thin for the style. Missing hte creaminess and maybe a bit too much hop bitterness.

Sampled from a growler shared by goldtwins on 7/2/06: Pours a nearly opaque dark brown with an airy, nicely-lacing dark tan head. Nice, mild caramel and dark fruity aroma has a light earthy hoppiness, but is overall pretty subdued. Body starts lightly sweet and caramely with some milk chocolate and toasted malt thinning considerably toward a blander earthy bittersweet finish. This one needs some more malt for body.

On tap. Pours black with a rocky beige colored head. Aroma is typical stout, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee. Flavor is the same. Palate is medium, mildly carbonated, thin for RIS, creamy finish. Makes a decent stout, but hardly imperial. Alcohol cant be much more than 6%.

Sampled from tap on 11/08/2006 at Barleys Smokehouse (Ale House #2)... Very dark brown color (almost black) with a tan-colored head. Aroma reminded me of roasted apples. The flavor was roasty and nutty, with a slightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel was a bit thin. Good, but not great.
