Thanks to the brewer Angelo for the fresh tasting before it is to be put on hand-pull. Opaque with a large frothy tan head and very good lace. Aroma hinted of molasses, chocolate, nutty and roasted malts, and winey. Touch of alcohol adds to the nose. The taste starts sweet with a nice twangy tone. Touch of berry and smoke gives this a nice complex taste. The finish a slightly bitter and woody. Dry yet full mouthfeel, slighty oily. This is a very nice Imperial that blends the best of the style. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 28, 2003 Growler, nice roasted malty aroma, with hints of coffee. The flavor is very roasty, with a hint of chocolate and coffee. Very strong flavor, that makes it a little hard to drink casually. But still damn good. MAP (1089), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 23, 2003 Growler. Smells of coffee and roasted malt. Flavor is nice but a tad on the dry side. Good beer, just not overly impressive compared to other imperials. blank (998), Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 30, 2003 A very solid imperal stout. The kind of beer the puts hair on your chest. Has great flavor but it a little to strong to be a casual drinking stout. Wakie (612), Centreville, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 29, 2003 On cask at the Smokehouse. A nice dark, smokey stout. Such fullness of flavor makes it difficult to have many of these but it was a great taste. Worth the $0.50 for a taster of it. jsquire (2123), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 13, 2003 I had this out of the cask at the Smokehouse and it was sort of washed out. Very creamy, but it didn't have the sharpness of flavor or the fullness of body that I expected, so I went to Ale House No. 1 and had it off the regular tap there. Much better, but still not the massive beer I was anticipating. Dark beer with dark head. It is a sweet stout, with lots of red wine and dark fruit sweetness to it. Good offering from Barley's, but if you have the choice, don't get it off the cask. Jokes (1453), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 2, 2003 Not all that dark or thick. Again roasted with coffee and chocolate. A little vanilla and maybe some oak, but still a little lacking. Something just isn't quite right here. Too thin and lackluster.
