Commercial Description:
Schwarzbier, or "black beer," is a German dark lager beer. It is opaque, black color and a full chocolatey flavor. Simiilar in flavor to British Stouts or Porters, it is crisper, due to the use of lager yeast and lower fermentation temperatures. The roots of Schwarzbier lies in Thuringia and Saxony; the oldest known Schwarzbier is Braunschweiger Mumme ("Brunswick Mum") brewed since the Middle Ages. In Germany, it is often served with dark, chunky breads with cream cheese. It also pairs well with marinated meats like brisket and is an excellent companion to sauerbraten. Modern examples of the style include Samuel Adams Black Lager, Shiner Bohemian Black Lager and Saranac Black Forest. If you’re feeling medievil, take home a growler and make yourself ... The Bismarck. Named for the favorite drink of the “Iron Chancellor,” Otto Von Bismark, this potent potable is 50% schwarzbier and 50% champagne and must be served in a beer stein. Prost! This brew was the creation of Matt Boehm, winner of the 2008 Homeberwer’s Competition, and tapped at Barley’s 14th annual Afternoon with the Brewers.

20 oz. Tap at Ale House #1. Pours dark chocolate, almost black, with a thin brownish head. Malts, nuts, as previously mentioned. Not as much chocolate as the traditional Schwarbeir may lead you to believe, which was fine with me. Heavy, but even as a small framed girl, I could handle a 20 oz. Barley’s always pulls through.

On draught at Ale House #1. The beer pours blackish-brown with a thin light tan head that dissipates quickly. Short strings of lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty with notes of malt and coffee. Medium body with a roasted malt character and flavors of nuts and coffee. Mild hoppiness as well. The finish is moderately bitter coffee with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall, these homebrew contest winners never disappoint.

Draft at Barleys Afternoon with the Brewers. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting and produced good lacing. Moderate roasted sweet malt and nuts aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium roasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. Sold drinkable brew.

Very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of toasted malts. Flavor of roasted/toasted malts. Full bodied and like a mild porter.
