shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jul 11, 2009 July 17-19, 2008: Barley’s #2 Droughtfire IPA . is cloudy and has a burnt gold color. A mild hoppiness and nutty toffee are present in the aroma. The flavor is similar; it is kind of nutty with "green" hoppiness and some light fruity malts. This medium-bodied beer is on the sweeter side. Overall this is a really mild IPA that doesn’t have anough bitterness to counteract the malty sweetnes.
Draught sample at the Oak Room in Athens, Ohio during Ohio Brew Week 2008. Rating #12 for this beer.
Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Sep 29, 2008 For a strong IPA, this was a surprisingly tame beast, which could not hold up the comparison with their more regular Centennial IPA. It was sweeter, almost candyish, think lemon cookies and you’re not far - a strong biscuity and bready character boosted up by zesty hops. Herbal and perfumey notions develop further as it warms out, offering shampoo and exotic fruits in the aftertaste. Really soft bitterness all along, that has to be aimed at being smooth, but it’s too sweet to be a 3.5+. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 18, 2008 An interesting IPA, enjoyed at the Smokehouse lotion. Chewy, with the orange citrus unknown additive. A almost there IPA. I think the IBU was 40-50 though and not the unoffical 0-70. Citrus colour, white white thin head and lace. An The C-hop citrus flavour was well drinkable.
stoutchap (297), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 17, 2008 Hazy coppery pour with a small head and some lacing. A little floral in the nose. Decent mouthfeel. Well balanced hopping with a little malt. citrus and floral hops - but neither overwhelms. A bit of caramel to even it out. Perhaps not a classic strong American IPA - but a very solid beer and very drinkable. Tmoney99 (4652), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 4, 2008 Draft at Alehouse #2. Poured hazy copper color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy sour citrus and floral aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid IPA. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA Feb 24, 2008 Growler via Mys Swap 3.0 (Thanks puddintane!) She pours a hazy amber with a large fluffy head. Nose is floral/citrus hops. Taste is quite interesting. The hops are what this is all about, and the profile is floral, herbal, spicy, earthy and citrusy. i would guess they use at least 4 or 5 different hops. I even detect some mint, lemongrass, and ginger. The body is light/medium, carbonation is just right. ogglethorp (882), Ohio, USA Feb 18, 2008 On tap. Pours coppery with a smallish off white head. Aroma is grapefruit, floral hops. Flavor is light malts, heavy citrus, floral hops. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished bitter. Mediocre at best, just like every other IPA recently from Barley’s DrHomolka (725), Columbus, Ohio, USA Feb 11, 2008 On firkin at the smokehouse. Pours a light, hazy orange with a small compact white head. Aroma is very fruity with subtle citrus hops. I don’t know if it was just the fruitiness of the hops confusing me but I swear I got an almost Brett character from this. I can’t be certain but I got some of that character fruitiness and horse-like qualities in the aroma and taste. Other flavors include bitterness and sweet citrusy hops. This was very drinkable and balanced, though at this point all of Barley’s IPAs are kind of becoming indistinguishable to me.
