Commercial Description:
First there was the fire. Then there was the drought. In the fall of 2007, we heard of the hop warehouse fire in Yakima Valley, Washington. Preliminary estimates were that $3.5-4.0 million of hops went up in smoke. (At today's prices in the winter of 2008, those same hops would have been worth around a cool ten million denaros.) It's estimated that about 4% of the entire U.S. hop crop vaporized that afternoon. Little did we know that the other shoe would soon drop. Around the same time, hail storms wiped out entire hop fields in Slovenia and Germany. Low rainfall in other parts of Europe yielded poor hop harvests. Hop farmers in the Pacific Northwest have been slowly selling their land to developers in the past decade. Beautiful hop fields are now gated communities. First there was fire. Then there was drought. Yet Barley's Firedrought IPA didn't sound right to us. Gotta go... searching for hops.

For a strong IPA, this was a surprisingly tame beast, which could not hold up the comparison with their more regular Centennial IPA. It was sweeter, almost candyish, think lemon cookies and you’re not far - a strong biscuity and bready character boosted up by zesty hops. Herbal and perfumey notions develop further as it warms out, offering shampoo and exotic fruits in the aftertaste. Really soft bitterness all along, that has to be aimed at being smooth, but it’s too sweet to be a 3.5+.

Draft at Alehouse #2. Poured hazy copper color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy sour citrus and floral aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid IPA.

An interesting IPA, enjoyed at the Smokehouse lotion. Chewy, with the orange citrus unknown additive. A almost there IPA. I think the IBU was 40-50 though and not the unoffical 0-70. Citrus colour, white white thin head and lace. An The C-hop citrus flavour was well drinkable.

On draught at the Smokehouse. This beer pours a lightly murky golden amber color with a medium and foamy off-white head that has decent retention. Patchy lacing on the glass. The aroma is moderately hoppy with notes of citrus and sweet fruit. Medium-bodied and zesty with hops and citrus flavors backed by a sweet malt base. The finish is clean and alternatively fruity and hoppy. The mildly bitter hops aftertaste sticks around for awhile as well. Above average all around, although of the 2 beers so far that are thumbing their noses at the hops shortage, I liked the Hop Envy a little better.

July 17-19, 2008: Barley’s #2 Droughtfire IPA . is cloudy and has a burnt gold color. A mild hoppiness and nutty toffee are present in the aroma. The flavor is similar; it is kind of nutty with "green" hoppiness and some light fruity malts. This medium-bodied beer is on the sweeter side. Overall this is a really mild IPA that doesn’t have anough bitterness to counteract the malty sweetnes.

Draught sample at the Oak Room in Athens, Ohio during Ohio Brew Week 2008. Rating #12 for this beer.

On firkin @ the Smokehouse: Pours a cloudy orange gold with a medium loose white head. Aroma, citrus hops, most notabely oranges, some sweet pale malts. Flavor, sweet malts up front, pale and caramel, leading to a pleasent citrusy and floral hop flavor, a nice balance to the beer. Citrusy bitterness on the finish, very well balanced and quite tasty.

From the firkin. Hazy golden color with a small white head. Aroma of citrus and floral hops. Flavor of tangy citrus hops. Finish of dry and bitter hops.

Growler via Mys Swap 3.0 (Thanks puddintane!) She pours a hazy amber with a large fluffy head. Nose is floral/citrus hops. Taste is quite interesting. The hops are what this is all about, and the profile is floral, herbal, spicy, earthy and citrusy. i would guess they use at least 4 or 5 different hops. I even detect some mint, lemongrass, and ginger. The body is light/medium, carbonation is just right.
