Commercial Description:
The Munich Lager is a traditional Bavarian Helles. It is a medium to deep gold colored beer with a creamy white head. It is slightly sweet with just enough hop bitterness to produce a very balanced beer. The finish and aftertaste remains malty and clean. Unlike Pilsner it is a malt-accentuated beer that is not overly sweet, but rather focuses on malt flavor with underlying hop bitterness in a supporting role. It is characterized by rounded maltiness without heaviness. This style was created in 1895 at the Spaten brewery to compete with Pilsner-style beers.

Golden colour. Aroma is lightly bready, lightly cidery. Slightly buttery character, with hints of white bread. A shade light for its own good.

Medium gold colour with a nice white head. Aroma is light hops with some maltiness. Slightly sweet taste with some hops for a delicate balance.

2004 draught @ Redbones. Light tangerine juice-like appearance, yellowish and lightly hazed with a small white head, though a bit too pale for the style. Aroma of saaz hops, not overly so, with some pils malt dryness and a bit of graininess. Begins with a crisp and interesting bite to it, with notes of yeast, almonds and honey, but the body dies off immediately afterwards. Wateriness to the extreme, low flavor through the middle and only a short, grain and alcohol sort of finish. The sour/sweet skunkiness is present, a strange stale/sharp alcohol tone, and though it begins to-style, it quickly becomes rather nostalgic of a crappy adjunt lager, as Bill says. Medium-light body.

Hazy banana liquer look. A fairly standard helles, albeit fresher. It still has a rather dank, lightly annoying, offkey corn syrupy sweetness quality--though subdued. Not a favorite style of mine.
