Deep purple tinted brown colored body. Nose is sweetened smoked malt and maple-infused malt-forward caramel. Nasty lactic sour flavor, coating the mouth with a tingly lactic yeast and pasty texture. Some lightly sweet caramel, maple, mild smoke, overall just terribly integrated and poorly executed. Has so much promise.

Pours deep amber with garnet edges and mocha head. Great looking brew. The aroma is full rauch smokiness with hints of sweet and dark malts in the background. The taste has pleasant even-ness to it between the smoky alderwood like goodness, caramel maltiness and mild roasty malts. It ends with mild drying malt astringency.

Tasting at the McBackus Backyard Bash. Thanks to Ibrew2or3 for the taste! Dark amber pour. Smoky ash tray aroma. Smooth smoky malt that does not blend very well. Didn’t like it.

Courtesy Ibrew2or3. Pours a very dark chestnut brown color that shows shiny copper when backlit. A small, foamy, tan colored head leaves soapy lines and spots of lace to mostly rejoin the body. Aromas include rich chocolate and caramel malts, with a hefty dose of smoke. There are some indiscernible dark fruits in there, though they bring a minerally sort of note along with them. Flavors are chocolaty and woody, with cola-like malt sweetness, smoky, ground, earthy spices, and a hint of sourness that seems a bit out of place. The palate is smooth and semi-dry, but lacking a bit in body for what I expected. Decent smoked brew.

Bottle (dregs)… Backus’s Backdoor Bash ‘08 … Murky prune-juice colored lager with a small, creamy, beige head. Great retention. In the nose, smoke and dark fruits abound. Medium-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Acidic, pleasantly sweet flavors meld with moderate bitterness. Tangy, then dry, finish. Muchos kudos to Ibrew2or3 for bringing this one to the Throwdown!

Sampled @ Backus’s Backdoor Bash. The pour was of a cola color. Now the nose was smoky but it smelt of an ashtray? The flavor was smoky and thankfully the ashtray was hidden. The alcohol was hidden nicely as it finished of slightly dry.

Bottle. Mahogony beer with a tan head. Caramel, smoke, and light chocolate aroma. Sweet caramel flavor with light dark fruitiness and light smoke. Medium-plus bodied. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Sweet caramel and light dark fruit lingers. Needs more smoke.

Tasting at mcbackus 10/19. Brown pour. Not good. Smokey, sour, odd. I couldnt drink much of this, but I am not a big fan of rauchbiers anyway.
