Commercial Description:
Early Cincinnati brewers shipping their beers into Tennessee would generously hop their beer to prevent spoilage during the long, arduous trip over the Cumberland Trail. It’s been said that few barrels ever actually made it into Tennessee, as they were traded away for coonskin caps or simply enjoyed along the way! This classic India Pale Ale is a somewhat fruity brew, with an aggressive hop finish. To the hopheads of the world: we’ve brewed this one for you!

22 oz. bottle. Pours a medium orange amber color with a medium off white head. The aroma is grassy, citrus hops , and light moderately sweet malt. The flavor is more grass with the citrus hanging around as well. Dry comes to mind, as does a strange damp hoppiness that is strange with this beer. There is probably a reason it has taken me this long to rate some of the few locals we have in Cincy.

12/19/2007: Barrel House Cumberland Pale Ale (Cask) has a grassy aroma with some vague citrus and a hint of butterscotch. The beer is a clear copper-orange color and is nearly still. The flavor is somewhat disconnected through. It is very grassy and dry with flavors of both old hops and "wet" hops (Cascade?), although it isn’t that good. The mild to moderate bitterness is lasting. This beer has a medium-light body and is smooth. I’m not so sure that the cask aging and dry hop did anything positive for this beer...

CASKsample at Nicholson’s Scottish Pub in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Rating #102 for this beer...

Draft pint from Arnold’s in downtown Cincinnati. Light orange pour with thin white head. Strong but quick blast of hops, also sweet, peachy, citrusy, and floral. Worth a try but unspectacular.

Bomber. Pours a copper body with a huge white head. Grainy, floral, moth y citrus aroma. Metallic notes and tin, with a grainy finish. Hops are very subtle. Nothing to write home about.

22 oz’er. Poured the suspected orange-copper color with a quick head. There’s a sweet grassy aroma to this. The initial impression is the same, a sweet citrusy beer -- but then a deepr metallic, woody sting, with a distinct peachy aspect to it, too. (#3541, 5/17/2009)

An orange pour with creamy white head and a really nice lace. Aroma is mostly malt and light hops. Flavor is a clean crisp malt flavor with a nice light bitter. Good carbonation and mouthfeel. The best beer I’ve had from these guys maybe ever. Don’t expect a monster ipa’ish beer just a nice drinker very nice.

The tap handle said, "Cumberland Pale Ale". I don’t know for sure that it was this one and not the one from Louisville, but since I’m in Cincinnati and this beer is from Cincinnati I’ll go ahead and enter it as this beer. The pour was vibrant copper with a nice, foamy white head that was slow to collapse and produced decent lacing. The aroma was dry piney hops, light spice and a bit of caramel malt. The flavor was dry hops and spice. Decent caramel malt. Average mouthfeel.
