Commercial Description:
Having to paddle back up the Ohio River was one reason why early settlers hardly ever returned to their homes in the East. The great sternwheelers opened up trade in the Ohio Valley and made travel a bit more enjoyable. Our SternWheeler Stout is a smooth, easy drinking dark stout with hints of chocolate and toffee.

Excellent stout. So smooth that it seems like a hybrid sweet stout and Irish dry stout. Rick, the brewer, does a fine job with all the B.H. beers and this one is no exception. Rich, coffee and chocolate flavors are evident. Just the right amount of bitterness. Very warming, firm and enjoyable.

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. This was my other favorite offering from Barrelhouse. Poured thick and dark. Sweet chocolate aroma. Flavor scored well with coffee, chocolate and toffee. This is the one to get on my next visit.

Had this one on tap at the Barrelhouse as usual. It is a very good stout with all those lovely chocolate and coffee overtones in both the aroma and the flavor. The appearance is that of pitch with a slight head. The finish is nice without all the burnt lingerings of so many other stouts.

Super strong coffee and chocolate flavor. Stronger bite than most. Tan warm chocolaty head and lacing.

Opaque black color, no head. Roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and sour lactose aroma. Sweet, sour and roasty with chocolate, lactose, smoked wood, and slightly vanilla flavors. Medium thick feel.

Draft - very nice! Black as night with a light brown head of tiny, tiny bubbles. Very roasty, chocolatey nose. Big, rich, roasty flavor with loads of coffee.

Deep black color (opaque) with no head. The aroma was very strong with roasted coffee beans, slight smoked wood, slight black licorice, dark chocolate. The flavor was quite sweet with a prominant roasty character...coffee, chocolate, slight lactic sourness in the finish. Slightly watery feel...not thin though...with a semi-dry finish.
