Commercial Description:
Dark ale, fermented in the bottle.
Inspired by a Breughel painting, “The Flemish Proverbs” (1559), in which several Flemish proverbs are depicted amongst which is the expression "He’s a pilaarbijter" ("pillar biter"), which means, ’He’s a hypocritical man.’

Bottled. Dark brown coloured, huge head, highly effervescent. Caramel malts dominate the aroma, some bitternes shining through in finish. Mediocre at best.

Hazy brown with a frothy beige head. Really nice aroma, but the flavour was a bit of a letdown.

Poured in the Bavik Pilaar Trappist glass. Muddy chestnut brown pour with really nice foamy head and foam lacing. Pleasant toasty slight spice aroma that moves into a nice pallet filler. Smooth with malts and grains with that Belgian Dubbel full flavor and no real bitterness. Liked this better than the blonde. Excellent Belgian, really enjoyed it and I will look for more.

Bottle and served in my little Karmeliet glass: Deep muddy brown with a frothy beige head and some lace. The aroma has notes of tart and sweet cherries, caramelized malts, brown sugar, musty Belgian yeast, cardamom, and rye vapours. The taste starts sugary sweet with a moderate dark fruit twang and is a bit pitty and rustic. There is some light spice and an overall farmhouse yeast appeal. The mouth feel is sprite but still maintains a softness of palate. This is quite strange, sort of a cross between a FLEMISH sour ale and an Abbey Dubbel... and I am digging it but alas still wanted a bit more oomph.

Bottled at Monks Café, Stockholm. Pours out in a hazy brownish mahogany colour with a rich frothy tan-coloured head. Yeasty aroma of dark cherries, anise and brown sugar. Fruity and yeasty flavour of dark cherries, dates and plums with yeasty notes of mild pepper, brown sugar and fudge. Medium-bodied with a lively carbonation. Spices, dates, cherries, chocolate and brown sugar in the finish that could have been lasting a bit longer.

Bottle (ZBF2008)
Orangy brown, small head. Slightly sour aroma. Sharp, fruity, and a little sour in the mouth. Some nutty wood component too. He said pillow-biter, ehehehehe.
