Commercial Description:
Leipziger Gose is a top-fermenting wheat beer {60% wheat, 40% barley malt} with coriander, salt, and lactic acid bacteria added in the boil. It is a 4.6% alc/vol eclectic beer whose name evokes a close relationship to the renowned Lambic/Geuze breweries in the Valley Senne nearby Brussels, Belgium.

Bottle: I didn’t really know what to expect with this one. Hazy orange/light amber color with a small white head. Real nice aroma from the beer, like nothing I’ve smelled. Salty aroma, with coriander, sweet malty alcohol, lots of sweet fruit (apples, pears, banana), some citrus, and pepper. Tastes intially salty and bitter. This quickly changes to highlight some of the geuze-like qualities combined with some nice apple, pear, bitter chocolate, plum. Finishes acidic, very dry, and a bit watery. Interesting.

Come on people, those of you who don’t taste the salt just aren’t paying attention...just kidding...a dark golden beer with a slightly fruity, salty, and dry scent. Taste is the same, salty, corriander, sublime malt and hops. This isn’t my idea of a session beer, and I may or may not ever try it again, but if I were in Leipzig and was drinking this baby fresh on tap don’t ya know I would be drinking it and loving it. Unique, tasty, interesting brew!

Odd appearance, hazy golden orange, decent size off white head. The body looked lifeless, but that head just never went away. Aroma akin to a hefeweizen, some banana, some wheat, some yeast. Banana in the flavor, along with a bit of spice, slightly tart, maybe even a little cidery. Interesting flavor to say the least. Not highly carbonated but yet prickly in some way. Also a bit creamy and easily quaffable. Quite interesting and would certainly make for a refreshing summer beer.

2004? Draught @ Redbones. Well here’s to drinking at 1 o clock in the afternoon on Saturday. No idea what to expect. Pours a copper-amber pretty clear with a small white head. Aroma of faint wheat and yeast and a hint of dried leaves (that’s what it reminded me of, dried leaves being gathered up to be burnt). Anyways, it tasted very similar to a gueuze. Very tart, lightly yeasty, though not funky. No real salt touches, though it was a bit strangely watery/dry. I cant put my finger on this one, but it’s pretty tastey. I just didnt like the fact that it was fairly watery and thin at the end. Good spicy, lightly dry caramel flavor. Interesting.

My first "gose" ever...didn’t even know what one was until I bought this bottle. Okay, so "gose" it is! Appearance: cloudy pale orange color, with a thick, creamy white head. Nice, attractive. Aroma: spicy, yet soft, with whiffs of fresh sea-foam like I’m detected in weizens, big with spice, and citrus, and so far I’m geared up for something like a hefe or a wit... Taste: unusual! Dry, and mellow, with an initial sourness. Not at all like I was expecting after that nose, way too flat on the palate. Rather light-bodied, cool and mild, with a very soft finish. I think I can actually taste the salt, too, I get the merest taste of salt, without it being too salty. Very drinkable, this, very, very, although I liked it, but it couldn’t love it. I needed more of a kick in the flavor for that. An intriguing style, rarely encountered, and quite easy to appreciate. If I’m ever in the mood for a mellow, dry brew that won’t go and blow my mind, gose it is!

Amber, clear, with a large, off-white, mostly diminishing head. Sparkling; lots of bubbles continuously flowing throughout. Not much to the aroma: syrupy malts and wet grains (wheat, mostly) with a touch of citrus. Lighter flavor than I was expecting. Nice balance of sweet and sour, but salty? Not noticeably so, in my opinion.

(Bottled, 0.75l) Hazy yellow/light brown color with a small head. Very fresh, slightly sour aroma with some banana, lemon, spices and hops. Sweetish, yeasty and lemony, spicy flavor. A nice, witbier-like German brew.

Purchased bottle in Ann Arbor, MI. Tasted on Aug. 31, 2004. Pours a golden amber color with moderate haze and a delicate, persistant head. Exhibits a fair amount of carbonation, similar to a Wit or Weizen. The aroma is slightly sweet with spicyness and hints of orchard fruit. Citrus or coriander aroma is not apparent. Flavor is slightly sweet with a coppery metallic element and an unusual spicyness. The salt is barely detectable and not at all unpleasant. There is no perceptible bitterness but the flavor is not overly malty or sweet. The flavor is reminiscent of a weizen but with different spices. Mouthfeel is moderately full bodied and not fizzy despite the carbonation level. This seems like an excellent summer beer and could be a good replacement for a hefe-weizen.
