Commercial Description:
Leipziger Gose is a top-fermenting wheat beer {60% wheat, 40% barley malt} with coriander, salt, and lactic acid bacteria added in the boil. It is a 4.6% alc/vol eclectic beer whose name evokes a close relationship to the renowned Lambic/Geuze breweries in the Valley Senne nearby Brussels, Belgium.

Deep gold orange, with fine thick head, some cloudiness from sediment. Slight sour nose w/ some metallic citrus? hints of vanilla, and coriander. Sour metallic citrus, some salt notes, the lactic acid presents interesting flavors. Very light mouthfeel with weediness and coriander...very interesting

Cool bottle! Sulphury farty acidic nose that goes bye and get*s better after beeing at the air. Fizzy carbonation. Koriander come through a lot. Acidicm, lemon kind of weak and not that pricky. Mustard seeds taste too - also salty. Very interesting and very uncommon for a German beer.

This is an adventurous beer that is done very well. Bonus points for uniqueness. Sulfury aroma out of the bottle. We found the nose got better by letting it breathe a little - herb and Beglian-like aromas. Hazy off-white color with a fizzy spongy head. Light citrusy malt with the corriander contributing to a slightly spicy middle. Got a little paper quality at the end. Kind of sour at times, like a Berliner Weisse, but not so sour. This is a trace of saltiness tucked away in the background. Thin, but overall a good balance. This beer grows on you and my final rating here doesn’t reflect my first impression of this brew. Give it a chance.

The beer came is a 0.5 liter brown bottle with label that looked like a blast from the past. The beer, when poured into an imperial pint glass, displayed extremely fizzy carbonation and a body that was yellow with a cloud of brown yeast that would not let any light pass through. I guess if a Hefeweizen is cloudy, this one is like an oncoming storm. The aroma was sweet and malty with some lambic like funkiness thrown in. The taste is very light with the yeast tasting very spicy with orange peel and clove that overpowered most other flavors except a note of sourness that reminded me of a lambic once again. I could not really detect much coriander, but the salt was evident in the way the beer dried up my mouth after each sip. This is a very unique taste that is somewhat of a cross between a witbier and a lambic. The downfall of this beer is a watered down empty mouthfeel, which is a bit odd considering the body is not very lightweight. I picked up mine at Green’s on Cheshire Bridge Road. In my opinion worth a try, as there is nothing else quite like it.

Interesting example of a wheat. Not like any I have had before. Darker then most blonde wheats, lighter then dark wheats. Aroma is a little heavier then the taste. A little clove and fruit, a bit of tartness at the end. Head was large diameter bubbles and fell off quick. By the way, the bottle it came in did not look like that pictured. It resembeld a Guiness Extrat stout bottle and was 1 pint.

Sligthly hazy light amber in color, this brew has a fruity orangy nose with lemony notes. Taste is similar to a waterey geuze with less tartness. Notes of apricot pop up mid swallow. Thin mouthfeel ends in a silky quenching finish. Unusual, but not unpleasant. Salt is not very apparent until the very end of the swallow, and even then is slight.

Pours with a two-finger head that goes slowly and leaves some lace. Medium bodied. Light carbonation. Hazy amber color. Nose is not distinquishable. Starts on the yeasty side, finishes with some tartness, reminds me of a wheat. $3.75 for a 500ml bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, Ma. Update: 1-12-2007 - $13.99 for 750ml bottle from Tulley’s Beer and wine Wells, Me.

Light orange with a nice big white airy head. Yeasty aroma. Light-hearted consistency, tart and sweet-lemony, a very thin-bodied drinker. Not what I expected when I saw corriander on the label ... but the salt definitely stings on the lips. I expected a heavy drinker, but instead this is a very nice light drinker for a warm summer day in Europe.
