Pours amber with minimal white head that dissipates quickly. Lively carbonation. Aroma is of malt, pine, cheap scotch, grain, and hops. Taste is of sweet hops, pine and notes of cheap scotch. Has a nice biscuity malt backbone. Starts off very bitter due to all the earthiness, but you warm up to it after a few sips. Just a drinkable beer with enough flavor to keep you interested, but nothing more. spikester (602), Salem, Oregon, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 18, 2008 Pours dark red-amber with a minor head and lacing. Aroma is deep and resinous. For a red ale this is well done. Hops are subdued and it’s well balanced. This is what Killians Red wished it was. Another fine craft beer from Montana. Haven’t had a bad one yet. Either it’s the water or they have few distractions! greenhorn1 (460), Mission Viejo, California, USA

Flavor is roasty and some breadiness, with a nice sweetness. Nice hop balance. Overall, it taste like a light German lager. Decent. Perkeo (318), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 15, 2006 Bottled, feb. ’06 as a spring seasonal, or more precisely, a march 17th seasonal: Slightly roasty lager, slight cherry and apricot on the nose, whiffs of diacetyl, a little bit in flavor as well, nice bread/bisquit/roast balance, somewhere between a vienna and a munich dunkel, nice and "real" tasting as a fresh product but maybe not a big fave in the future... truegen (164), Puyallup, Washington, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 23, 2008 12oz. bottle. Muted bronze appearance, with a good head on the pour, which then dissolves rapidly to a light ring. It has a plum/currant/fruit sweet aroma, with just a hint of breadiness. The taste follows the nose pretty straight. Not much hoppiness in this brew, which perhaps makes the malty sweetness a little too prominent. There’s an astringent effect on the tongue that I find intriguing. Not a typical red. mbgrayson (145), Anaconda, Montana, USA

Malts dominate with a hint of lemon and roastiness. Finishes with a slight hop bite. Very well balance of flavors. A little weak on carbonation and a bit watery but overall a very drinkable spring lager. montanabeerman (7), Bozeman, Montana, USA does not count | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 5, 2006 Bottle. Smalllish off-white head with a mild yeasty or doughy type aroma. Great full mouthfeel with a light caramel sweetness. This beer is considerably more bitter however than any other Bayern beer Ive ever tasted. Nice grapefruit or citrus notes, good finish.
