CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Dec 18, 2007 Sampled at the second annual Bistro’s West Coast Barrel Aged Beer Fest as St Benedict Dark Belgian: Mostly transparent hazy copper bronze with a thin ring of white bubbles. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and mild bourbon oak with a touch of Belgian yeast. Starts with a fairly-full caramel malty sweetness drying some toward a doughy buttery oaky finish. Pretty well balanced and fairly complex, but I still don’t like the combination of Belgian yeast and bourbon oak that gives the buttery character. IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA Nov 12, 2007 Draft at the Bistro’s West Coast BA Fest, 11/10/07; called St Bernardus Dark Belgian; ABV 7.1%, Nose is oaky, with plumminess, and a touch of vanilla; hazy brown wwith only a few bubbles; flavor is bourbon, caramel, vanilla, and dark fruit! beerguy101 (3861), Newark, California, USA Apr 11, 2007 Tasted on firkin at the 4th Annual Firkin Gravity Festival. This Belgian ale poured a medium brown amber color. Small to no head. Aroma is mildly fruity with a touch of bourbon and wood. A medium bodied Belgian Ale. Malts are fruity and sweet, Bourbon and wood noticeable, but not understated or overpowering. There is a very wine like feel to this one, it has a vinous like flavor, think red wine. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
