From tap at the brewpub. Pours clear and golden orange with a small off white head. Aroma is light roasted and toasted breadish malt. Solid malty flavoured, vague bitterness. Ends dry malty, no remaining sweetness and very low on bitterness.

Tasted at the brewpub on 7/9/2009. This California Common pours a medium amber color. The aroma is malty and fruity. A medium bodied California Common. The malts are caramel and semi sweet. The hops are slightly grapefruity. Has more the qualities of an amber than a California Common. The malts don’t seem to have the sweet estery quality than is typical in a stream beer. A touch tart in the finish, which I wasn’t expecting and did not like much. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

I had this on draft at the Beach Chalet brewpub. Dark amber pour, some light fruitiness, but I got a sour finish that I didn’t like.

Tap at the brewpub: Clear copper pour topped by an off white dense lacing head. Nutty aroma, evident crystal malt with some mild esters and caramel. Creamy light body with a nutty flavor. Tons of crystal malt with a mild hop presence. Most of the bitterness of husk and toast. OK.

Tap at the brewpub. The body was dark amber with a light khaki head. The aroma was grapefruit and almonds. There was also some toffee. The taste was nutty with some lightly bitter grapefruit. Nicely balanced and very drinkable.

Never been a fan of this style. Mild amber with a decent froth head. Light malt and fruity hop smells are present. Rye-like off-flavor.
