Commercial Description:
A dark ale or Stout. The name is taken from the legendary Parson Darby who saved many lives at Beachy Head. Parson Darby was appalled by the number of shipwrecks and drowned sailors and he knew what was needed was a reliable, fixed light that would warn the men at sea of the whereabouts of the Beachy Head coastline. So he excavated "Parson Darby's Hole" in the caverns that already existed near Belle Tout. He created a chimney that led up from the coast and "rooms" above it where he set lights on ledges on very stormy nights. He often spent whole night's in his caves watching the sea and many lives were saved. Even when ships were actually wrecked, some sailors were pulled to safety into Parson Darby's Hole.

Cask at The Crosse Keys, JDW, Gracechurch St, London 14-11-09 Pours dark brown, probably black but poor light which is a problem I encounter in just about all JDW’s makes it tricky to be certain on colour. Some chocolate on the nose, cocoa powder in the mouth, a little sourness at the edges, bit of coffee, its fine. A6 A4 F7 P4 Ov13 3.0

16th April 2008 Dark ale - starts off like a smoky porter but has a fruity undertone. Dry finish with a subtle sweet note. A little off the beaten track!

aroma of burnt autumn leaves, very pleasant! slight heaviness to the palate. colour is pitch black. Nice and warming, but I wouldn’t drink a lot of it.

Bottle at Chris_o’s The Wolf tasting. Thanks to Ethereal for this one. Very dark brown with thin beige head. Really quite good. Some charcoal. Drier than most. Lacks a bit of body, but ok.

Bottle @ Chris_o.
Pours pitch-black with a small, creamy beige head. Aroma is sweet chocolate and cocoa. Perhaps a bit thin, otherwise nice mouthfeel. Quite dry flavour, wonderful balance with a good cocoa base. Great, mild stout.

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle at Casper’s Christmas Cracker.
Totally black with a lovely consistency and a thin but tenacious tan head. Fantastic milky coffee aroma with very strong dark chocolate and vanilla. Charming and very nosable. Glorious coffee stout flavour. Chalky and bitter. Dark chocolate, tarry, full bodied and complex. Superb light smoky notes. Lovely chocolate malt finish with great length. Considering these guys have only been brewing for a year this is a stunning stout. Best beer I have had from a new brewer in a long time. Fanbloodytastic!

Bottle with Mes, reakt and tashi - Caspar’s Christmas Cracker 07. Superb smoky coffee aroma and excellent similar flavour. Palate is smooth - this is highly drinkable stuff. Great beer from such a new brewer!
