Very thick dark brown with a thin beige rim. Very herbacious with some nice malt and definite notes of Sunday dinner stuffing. Thick and tarry with a lingering bitterness on the finish. Although the herby notes are pleasant enough they just take over a bit too much. Lick of ginger right at the death is lovely. Nice enough but not amazing. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 18, 2008 Bottle purchased from the brewery, drunk with renffisch on 18th March 2008. Comes out of the bottle as a totally opaque, near-black engine oil of a beer. Massive aroma of treacle, nettles, sage and medicinal hops. Roasted malt flavours cling to the corners of your mouth as a fruity bitterness teases your tongue. Smooth and so oily that you could lube your car with. Greatness is just out of reach at the moment though as I can’t deny it is rather unbalanced. If Roger and Charlie can tweak the recipe a bit, this will be very special.
