Commercial Description:
Big Bear, as the name implies, is a hefty, black, Russian Imperial-style stout. This strong stout boasts a rich, caramel sweetness lavished by a robust, deep-roasted heartiness you can sink your teeth into... Big Bear's bold flavors are produced using a blend of Belgian and English roasted barley and crystal malts. Some unique flavors come forth in the malt character...Louisiana sweet molasses and dark brown sugar. This dark brew is well hopped with Chinook and Cascade hops, which are somewhat, masked by the malt. This is a balanced strong brew boasting an ABV of 8.1% that can creep up on you, "so don't get mauled". It has a dry roasted quality that masks its high alchohol content, so drink responsibly.

pitchh black with thick tan head. sweet nose with hints of chocolate. flavor has a very nice malt complexity containing mostly chocolate and roasted, both very well represented, the chocolate especially provides a great flavor. no discerning hops but well balanced. a very good beer.

Black beer. Big tan head that can stand the test of time. Mild chocolate aroma with hops. Excellent stout flavor with cocoa, hops, malt and mildness. Milk texture. Clean, bitter finsih with a note of coffee. Is it the best stout I’ve had?, probably, since it adds bitterness to greatness.

THX to drewbeerme. Pours black wih a yellowish head and hints of lacings. Strong smell of coacoa. Sweet with strong aromas of dark chocolate. Also some coffe aromas, roasted malts and a hints of ash. Some wood and kinda bourbonish. Medium carbonation. Medium to heavy bodied. Nice roasted and date-bourbon finish.

Beer pours an almost black brown color with a huge foamy head. Smells like coffee, malt, and a touch of chocolate. Taste is more hops then I expected, but not overdone. Good coffee notes with a touch of bitter chocolate on the finish.

Black bottom/ tan on top. Nice, even body. Malt and hops are well placed. Not too fruity or candied. Can barely tell there is alcohol in it...nice, but dangerous. Roasty and dry. Rich, not sticky sweet. Not an overabundance of chocolate. Great..with enough yeast to remain beerish .(is that a word?, it is now!).

Bomber bottle. Pours dark with a quickly disappearing head. Roasted malt flavor. Some caramel and coffee notes as well. Fairly smooth finish with a slight hop bite. Very good stout but have had better.

Finally getting around to rating this one. I tend to find most of Bear Republic’s beers overrated, and this is no exception. It’s a fairly run of the mill Imperial Stout, with your basic hop profile and roasted barley structure including notes of french roast, soy, and chocolate. In that sense it does its style justice, but what’s missing here is any sense of enthrallment on my part. The complexity is lacking, there’s no viscosity in the mouthfeel, and the finish is underwhelming. Solid, and probably a decent session stout, but by no means in the 98 percentile.

Bottle and on draft at a random liquor store in OH on a beer trip. Pours dark rich viscous like imperial stout should. Aroma is roasted matl, smoke, brown sugar, and a moderate hop presence that i cant ignore. Good roasty finish with little etoh.
