Commercial Description:
Big Bear, as the name implies, is a hefty, black, Russian Imperial-style stout. This strong stout boasts a rich, caramel sweetness lavished by a robust, deep-roasted heartiness you can sink your teeth into... Big Bear's bold flavors are produced using a blend of Belgian and English roasted barley and crystal malts. Some unique flavors come forth in the malt character...Louisiana sweet molasses and dark brown sugar. This dark brew is well hopped with Chinook and Cascade hops, which are somewhat, masked by the malt. This is a balanced strong brew boasting an ABV of 8.1% that can creep up on you, "so don't get mauled". It has a dry roasted quality that masks its high alchohol content, so drink responsibly.

#900 here at Ratebeer! ....Sweet tar molasses aroma ... black as midnight ... lacing is all the live! .... definition of an imperial stout ... very sweet libation ... alcohol is quite well hidden ... this is a perfect beer to celebrate ones birthday but make sure not to celebrate to hearty, can be a sneaky brew!!

Poured the expected ultra-dark brown with a nice two-finger tall light brown head. Spots of lacing. The aroma was light caramel malts, thin chocolate, some coffee and some earthy, piney hoppiness hanging around n the background. The flavor was chocolate, light coffee and caramel malts with some definite presence of citrus hops. The carbonation was on the high side causing the mouthfeel to disappoint a bit. A very nice stout but a pretty average imperial stout.

Another wonderful offering by Bear Republic Brewing, my new favorite. This beer is outstanding, Pours dark and rich with a nice creamy froth. Smells of roasted coffee and malt. Tastes of chocolate, roasted malt, coffee and a great offset of high hops to keep a strong finish through the palate.

Bomber, with about a year on it. Pours a dark brown with a fizzy one finger tan head, minimal lacing. Aroma is nice, with lots of dark fruits, along with chocolate, molasses, brown sugar and espresso. Flavor is more dark fruits, roasty malts, chocolate, and some caramel, and more than a hint of citrus hops. Mello and tasty, this is one nice, accessible, affordable IS. If splitting hairs, I’d probably call this a robust stout more than an Imperial, but who really cares? Good stuff!

A- Big tan colored head that doesn’t back down quickly. Black in color. S- Smells of Sweet buns, floral notes. Not at all what i was expecting. T- Taste is of chocolate, coffee, slightly bitter aftertaste. M- Thick mouthfeel that is very carbonated. D- For an IRS this is extremely drinkable.

22oz bottle. Dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma is pretty hoppy with a nice dose of grapefruit riding over dark chocolate. Some restrained burnt marshmallow sweetness. The flavor is big roasty malts with lots of hops. Pretty dry, with more dark chocolate flavors. The hops and malts balance so well, and the dryness makes it really drinkable. No harshness or astringency. Full body with fine bubbles. On the lighter side of IRS, but its so drinkable and tasty. Hoppy, but the balance makes this the tastiest dry stout that I’ve had.

bomber. pours a thin black into the glass and levels out with a thick tan head. a bit of licorice in the nose. the hops really come through in this stout... especially on the finish. sweet malts, deep caramel and a bit of coffee. alive on the palate, bitter up front... overall not a bad IS, but certainly not up to par with the best. glad I tried it, but not again.
