Commercial Description:
Big Bear, as the name implies, is a hefty, black, Russian Imperial-style stout. This strong stout boasts a rich, caramel sweetness lavished by a robust, deep-roasted heartiness you can sink your teeth into... Big Bear's bold flavors are produced using a blend of Belgian and English roasted barley and crystal malts. Some unique flavors come forth in the malt character...Louisiana sweet molasses and dark brown sugar. This dark brew is well hopped with Chinook and Cascade hops, which are somewhat, masked by the malt. This is a balanced strong brew boasting an ABV of 8.1% that can creep up on you, "so don't get mauled". It has a dry roasted quality that masks its high alchohol content, so drink responsibly.

Sample at the Super Terrific Stout Tasting on Feb 16th. This beer pours a nearly opaque black color with a medium light brown head that burns away slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate malt and coffee at first, with some vanilla in the background later. Rich, creamy body with toasted malt, chocolate and coffee flavors. The finish is somewhat dry with an espresso flavor that leaves a moderately bitter and lingering aftertaste. Pretty solid from start to finish.

Bottle, shared @ jbrus’s place. Black color, almost opague. Cream, black chocolate and cacao in the aroma. Strong roasted flavor with dark chocolate, blackcurrant and coffee. Long roasty hopbitter aftertaste with cacao powder. Excellent brew! Re-rate @ home. Malt, coffee, salt and licorice in the aroma. Alcoholic flavor with roasted malt coffee, licorice and salt. Roasty bitter aftertaste.

Bottle@Home. This one has a moccha and blackcurrant aroma with hints of licorice and vanilla. Very dark brown color, light brown head, good lace. Sweet start and soon hop bitterness comes in together with sweet chocolate and roasted coffee. Nice but average palate.

Pours black with medium deep brown head. Aroma is of (milk) chocolate. Light flavor of chocolate and coffee. Very thin, almost unnoticeable finish with a hint of hops. Very drinkable, although I expected a bit heavier.

Pours black with a decent sized head. Aroma of chocolate, citrus hops, molasses, and a touch of coffee. Nice flavor, seems a little thin however. Don’t notice the alcohol.

Citrus Hop Aroma. Pours dark brown to black thin head. Sweet grapefruit flavor smoked hops in the finish. Smooth but a little dry. I could drink this often.

A very nice and different impy. Aroma wasn’t as big as most...chocolate and black licorice with a hint of coffee. Pour was the standard near black with a thin off white ring for a head. Taste was very roasty and bitter. Nice chocolate and coffee tastes with a hoppiness that I haven’t seen in an imperial stout. Huge carbonation carries the flavors through. Nice beer.

650 ml bottle from Bevmo. Pours an opaque black color with a big clumpy tan head that lasts forever. The aroma was unimpressive with a trace of molasses, sour dates and a touch of roasted malts. Unlike the aroma, the flavor is rich, bold and complex; present: dark biter chocolate, coffee, burnt toast, walnuts and molasses. This one also has a slight biter bite that complements the flavors nicely. The mouthfeel is full, smooth and creamy. The finish is long with lingering biter chocolate. Overall: This is an excellent stout. Recommended
