Taste is quite hoppy and bitter, but also of alcohol and roasted coffee malt. Very complex, pretty enjoyable, but I don’t think I could take a whole lot of this one.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 20, 2007 Dark black pour with a thick brownish head. Dark roasted malt in the nose, a touch of coffee. Surprisingly thin body and taste, compared to other imperial stouts. Still nice, but average for a RIS. JoeMcPhee (5010), Jackson Heights, New York, USA

Dark black beer wtih a very thick dark brown head. Rich chocolate aroma, dark cocoa,. Some lovely fruity character. Excellent balance of sweetness and roast. A touch of leather and roasted barley. Falvour is excellent with soft molasses, cocoa and roast. A touch of raisiny chewiness and soft resiny hops. A bit of pine as well. The palate is excellent, sweet and balanced. Creamy and slightly chewy. A bit peppery towards the finish. Fantastic balanced brew with a hint of blackberry on the finish. MrRain (433), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 17, 2007 22oz bottle poured in a tulip. Big Bear Black Stout pours black. Even held up to the light you cannot see anything through it. It is the darkest beer I’ve seen. the head is large and creamy looking like ice cream. The lacing is big and beautiful. This is a great looking beer. It smells like toasted barley and caramel. So far this beer is going well. The taste is very nice. It has a burnt grain flavor mellowed with caramel and brown sugar. It has a full chewy body but finishes surprisingly dry. The alcohol is too well hidden though. I expect to have some alcohol presence when drinking an imperial stout and this beer loses points for being too mellow. This is a great beer but does not hold up to the big boys dominating the top imperial stout slots. kmweaver (2471), Sebastopol, California, USA

(I’m really starting to lose track of things at this point.) Pours a dark brownish-black color; yellowed khaki-colored head with solid, fine-bubbled lacing. Pleasant, bitter chocolate and light citrus hops in the aroma; some dry burnt malts coming through. Fluffy carbonation; medium-to-full mouthfeel: dark chocolate and bitter citrus at the core; roasted / charred malts coming through at mid-palate; definitely stuck somewhere between a stout and the imperial variety; dense yet still sessionable. Lengthy, bitter chocolate and biscuity notes in the finish; quite dry. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 14, 2007 Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Roasted malts flavor. Mildly bitter finish. Body is bit more carbonated and lighter on the tongue that I’m used to for an Imperial Stout. A good beer that goes down easily. Tejas (701), Dallas, Texas, USA
