Commercial Description:
Big Bear, as the name implies, is a hefty, black, Russian Imperial-style stout. This strong stout boasts a rich, caramel sweetness lavished by a robust, deep-roasted heartiness you can sink your teeth into... Big Bear's bold flavors are produced using a blend of Belgian and English roasted barley and crystal malts. Some unique flavors come forth in the malt character...Louisiana sweet molasses and dark brown sugar. This dark brew is well hopped with Chinook and Cascade hops, which are somewhat, masked by the malt. This is a balanced strong brew boasting an ABV of 8.1% that can creep up on you, "so don't get mauled". It has a dry roasted quality that masks its high alchohol content, so drink responsibly.

22oz bottle, courtesy of a recent trade. Thanks! (I’m really starting to lose track of things at this point.) Pours a dark brownish-black color; yellowed khaki-colored head with solid, fine-bubbled lacing. Pleasant, bitter chocolate and light citrus hops in the aroma; some dry burnt malts coming through. Fluffy carbonation; medium-to-full mouthfeel: dark chocolate and bitter citrus at the core; roasted / charred malts coming through at mid-palate; definitely stuck somewhere between a stout and the imperial variety; dense yet still sessionable. Lengthy, bitter chocolate and biscuity notes in the finish; quite dry.

Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Roasted malts flavor. Mildly bitter finish. Body is bit more carbonated and lighter on the tongue that I’m used to for an Imperial Stout. A good beer that goes down easily.

Smells fantastic. Bitter, dry and chocolatey come to mind first. Good really drinkable stout.

Bottle thanks to miketd. Poured a dark brown color with a moderate beige head that diminished quickly. Aroma of chocolate and hops. Some chocolate and roasted malts upon entry, which leads a hop hit. Leaves a slight sweet chocolate aftertaste with the hops. A bit thin and watery for an imperial stout. As drewbeerme alluded to, it is more reminiscent of Stone XI than an imperial stout. Not a bad beer, I just think it should be recategorized.

Bottle via trade with lb4lb. Simple aroma of roasted malt and vanilla. Slightly metallic. Pours black with a creamy light brown head. Flavor has dry malt some dark chocolate and coffee fairly simple. Medium to full bodied. Finishes a tad watery.

On tap. Opaque with a small tan head. Malty aroma laced with chocolate, coffee, and roasted nuts. Very smooth, flavors of toffee, slight cocoa, and a nice bitter espresso finish. Alcohol is definately hidden well in this one. I wouldn’t have pegged it as an Imperial stout though; it is a little weak for the style, but a solid beer nonetheless.

Tasty stout. Sweet chocolate and coffee. Hops are definetely masked by malt. @ 8.1% abv, it is well hidden. Very delicious.
