It has rich caramel and roasted coffee elements. I don’t always like imperial stouts as they sometimes are harsh, burnt, bitter, and otherwise lacking in flavour, but this is very flavourful, full-bodied, and balanced and not at all bitter while the roasted element does not taste overly burnt. It is deep, deep brown with a good tan head and decent lacing. A major problem for me, though, is at this alcohol level I’ll usually want a barleywine instead. verymerrymonk (257), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Pours dark with a fairly laid-back tan head. The aroma is dominated by vanilla and roasty malt with vinous hints and burnt dark toffee. The flavor has a lot going on: vanilla and a bit of bitter chocolate, malt powder, a whisper of smoke, unfortunately a bit of cardboard, diet cola, still some hops on the close. The beer basically drinks like a regular stout both in flavor profile and in mouthfeel; no alcohol burn and little heaviness to this one.
I found it interesting and enjoyable. But I wonder whether it wouldn’t have been better fresh. It’s worth a revisit to find out. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 29, 2007 Dark dark brown with a thin tan dense head. A bit sweet with roast. A little milky lke an old cup of coffee with some chocolate. A bit fruity. Mostly coffee. Low carbonation, not a lot of viscosity. Lightly sweet roasty. a bit like old coffee. A bit acidic. Kind of one dimensional. Muddy roast. Not a great lingering flavor. beisen (90), California, USA

Nice foamy tan head and lacing as you go. Aroma is wheat and caramel sweetness. Roasted malts with chocolate flavor, some currant sweetness. Real good. Real strong. Liked it a lot. travita (1927), Frisco, Texas, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 17, 2007 Black body with mahogany edges. Small, patchy, light tan head that leaves behind a micro-sheet of lacing. The aroma is comprised of strong, resinous pine hops of a roasted barley, chocolate, and caramel base. There also appears to be some smoothing oatmeal on the nose. This is a very hoppy smelling stout. The flavor again shows ample piney hops with a chocolate and caramel base. Oatmeal is again present, adding to the smooth palate. Finishes dry, leaving a lingering bitter resin taste on the tongue. Medium body. Smooth and easy to drink. Very enjoyable, and refreshingly hoppy for the style. Cut from the same mold as Rogue Shakespeare Stout.
